Never heard this word or description until MFP.


Experts in eating disorders are concerned about an Internet-fueled trend in which teenage girls and young women pursue an elusive and possibly dangerous weight-loss goal: to become so slender that their thighs don't touch even when their feet are together.
Specialists say achieving a so-called thigh gap is risky and virtually impossible. But some exceptionally thin models have the gap, which is upheld as a beauty achievement on countless Tumblr pages, blogs and other social media sites.
'The issue of focusing on a particular body part is very common,' said Claire Mysko, who oversees teen outreach and digital media for the National Eating Disorders Association, an advocacy group. 'What is new is these things have taken on a life of their own because of the Internet and social media.'

    Also, I'm gonna start the new obsessive Tumblr trend. Toe gap. You know. Large gaps between your toes 'cause they're too skinny to cramp together. That's how ya really know you're skinny. :drinker:

    Yeah, seriously freaks me out that this is such a THING. Who cares? Young women, or any women, can obsess over body parts without social media's help. Most 30-something women I know want a 100% flat perfect stomach with nary a stretchmark, dimple, mole, or otherwise. For many/most of them that is not going to happen for a variety of reasons (body type, previous pregnancies, whatever). Should we freak out about photos of supermodels with perfect flat bellies now?

    also teenagers are always going to be stupid about this stuff anyway. (in general - i am not referring to any specific individuals. but mostly the girl ones.)

    I saw something funny on Pinterest with two thin super tanned legs shown from above (bent at knee) clearly someone with the vagina window (yes I've also adopted that term) and it says something like "Skinny girls legs be lookin' like two boiled hot dogs" Made me laugh!!!

    I hear about this issue quite a bit, but the very few girlfriends of mine who do have it attribute it to genetics and did pretty much nothing to get it as far as I have noticed. That being said, I don't find it to be a particularly attractive or unattractive aspect of a woman's body.
