I did a 5k in September and did well.
I signed up for a 5k in October and haven't been training for it. Any ideas how I should start training?

  • When it comes to quick cardio training, I had a lot of luck with HIIT training, but only if I had a buddy hold the stopwatch to keep me honest and push me. It REALLY sucked for the first few days but it was probably the quickest way I was able to increase my cardio abilities.

I did a 5K in August and since then have been running 1 mile on the treadmill 3x a week...thats IT. Last Saturday, I ran a 5K expecting to die because I havent been really training...and I ran my fastest 5K to date. I was so excited and I am still not sure how I pulled it off, but I workout 5x a week....I take cardio classes and strength training....and even though it is not running, it all helps in its own way.

Most 5Ks are not hardcore races...they are low-key kind of fun runs....those are the kind I like the most, the pressure is off to run super fast. Enjoy yourself....

    Good luck! :)

I did a 10k without training and I am not a runner to begin with. You'll be fine.

How did you get ready for the 5k in September? If you did well, then follow that strategy.

I was running half mile every other day. For the first week. And after that I would add 1/2 mile every time after the first week.
Also working with a personal trainer. But I'm no longer doing a trainer, working on my own.

Is it a race or just a fun run? Most 5 K's are just for fun charity things and half the people there will walk all or some part of it. Just do what you can and have fun.

I ran last night for the first time in a month. It was a lot of fun and I was not out of breath. I had to run inside cause it was raining and cold. The 5k that I'm doing is a full moon run.

Even then, they still can be very competitive at the pointy end. I did a small, low key 5K Sunday. My 21:28 was good enough for 12th. Winner went 17:01, and I was "chicked" 3 times (3 women beat me, by between 10s and 0:58).

OP: I'd get out and run a couple miles a week, spread out between 3 or 4 days. Get your body ready to run again. There are actual formulas that'll say how much fitness you loose over time off - it's gradual, it starts quickly, but it takes a long time to loose A LOT of run fitness/speed.
