do depressive periods (not clinical but periods of sadness) slow down weight loss?

Depends. It's not likely to change your metabolism, it's still calories in vs calories out. However, it may make you more likely to eat more, or more likely to eat less. It may make you less motivated to go out and exercise, or more likely to go for a long walk or run to clear your head and improve your mood. It may do none of those things. It's all in if/how it affects your eating habits and your energy levels, which is going to be different for everyone.

If you (or anyone) is feeling depressed, do see a doctor, though. Please. There's SO much out there that can help, there's no reason to feel that way if you don't have to. Best of luck.

I tend to be lethargic when I'm sad. I'm also more inclined to skip my workout or cut it short. I'm sure I burn less.
  • Yes, but my depressive periods tend to be of the variety that make getting out of bed an accomplishment worth celebrating with ice cream. YMMV.

As someone who is manic depressive, I find it nearly impossible to eat when I'm going through a depressive phase, I simply have no appetite. My intake oftentimes reduces itself to around 800-1000 calories which is obviously very low. I have to eat a lot of liquid meal replacements. Once my few months of misery are over though, I usually go on a surplus and gain back weight and build an *kitten* ton of muscle.
