Moving to Colorado Springs

We're thinking of moving to Colorado Springs this summer after I get my BS in Finance.
For those of you who know the city, what area should I try to find housing?
I've read in other forums that the westside is the best. BUT I don't know if it is an expensive area or not. We are a young couple with a baby so we don't really make a whole lot. It will probably depend on what kind of job I get and how much I get paid.
Which leads me to my next question.. How is the job market?

It depends on what you are looking for in price range. If you are buying then it goes from around 180k+ on the south end to 280k+ on the north end for new homes. The price range for used homes are similar. Price range for renting will be around $700 for a 1 bedroom apartment and then more for additional rooms or renting a home.

Job market is like the rest of the nation. If you look hard enough you will find something, if you are looking for a particular price range then the higher you are looking the narrower the search.

I live just south of the springs in the Widefield/Security area, AKA south springs or north Fountain. The area is blossoming in business and homes/apartments along the Powers/Mesa Ridge corridor.

If you like older buildings aka vintage then west side is a nice area. The town started mostly on the West Central and blossomed away from the mountains in the three directions. The far northern area near Air Force Academy and East area (East of Powers/North of Platte) is all relatively new areas. In the south east area is also relatively new homes. All those areas have new apartment complexes as well.

Crime in the city, unfortunately, is through out with the major area being north of Hancock Expressway, South of Platte, East of Jetwing and west of Union. This area seems to have the most trouble.

There is two major throughfares in the city, I25 and Powers. I25 is nice during the non peak times since you can drive from one end of the city to the other in 20-25 minutes. Powers is a little slower due to it has stop lights along its roadway. You can also include Academy Blvd but again you have lots of lights.

Hope this helps and if you have any other questions please ask away.

Welcome & Hello Colorado Springs neighbors!

We moved back to the Springs a couple years ago from Maine and decided that if we were going to live in a city than what more beautiful, quaint area than downtown Colorado Springs. We love it! walk everywhere and rarely use the car anymore. You can pick up a nice fixer older traditional style home for under $200k downtown if you search hard and be patient. We paid $200k which includes a guest cottage. Good Luck! Hope you you choose our Beautiful little city it's great here!

I've not noticed more crime than anywhere else! Just like in any city, there are good areas and bad. I live right downtown and walk everywhere. I did however check the Sexual Predator list for our neighborhood before buying as well as the crime in our area as anyone moving to any city should do.

My favorite thing about living in Colorado Springs is how close everything is you can go on a hike and not see any part of city life, you can camp 20 min away, so much to do and quite a fit & healthy little city.
