Swimming calories?

It says on MFP app that 40 minutes of 'general breast stroke' will burn over 600 calories! I'm finding that hard to believe if I'm honest. What's the best way to calculate calorie burn when swimming? TIA x

I did a leisurely swim alternating between Breast Stroke and Freestyle for 60 minutes the other day and burnt 484 Cals. I was wearing my Heart Rate Monitor so I believe it was pretty accurate. The distance in that time was 1 Mile.

I agree, I find that hard to believe - I even find leisurely swimming at ~380 calories hard to believe, especially with the natural buoyancy of the water.

The big question is what does MFP consider moderate or vigorous or leisurely effort??

I looked up one site and it stated swimming the crawl 75ft/minute as almost 700 calories for 40 minutes at my weight (207) I used to swim over double that speed. I would research the calories burned and balance it against velocity, probably more accurate.

I half the numbers for Tennis and swimming. The best way to measure is by the calories you eat and your weekly average weigh in. If your weight goes down and your on point in terms of eating that is fine.

I made a HUGE mistake here.... so sorry. Swam yesterday 1750m for 60 minutes. Calories were only 340.
