On the West Coast we say soda.

The East Coast generally refer to it as pop.

Calling it Coke is just branding. Like Q-Tips, Kleenex, and other non-sense.

Actually on the East coast we say "Soda".

"Pop" is more of a rust-belt/midestern thing (also having lived there)

Hearing someone call all soda "Coke" would make me want to punch a baby seal.

You shouldn't punch seals because something makes you upset... You should throat punch a stranger instead.

I don't think I've ever heard any of my fellow Canadians use the word "soda" before. It's just "pop" here when generally referring to the carbonated beverage.

If I ever used the word "coke" to refer to "pop" I would just end up with a coke, no other options.

What do you say when you're talking about the sugary caffeinated beverage?

Here, when you ask for "coke" at a restaurant, they ask what type. (sprite, coke, diet, etc)
Pepsi first. Then Coke if they don't have any.

Yes, that's the way its done.

    THIS....

Hearing the word "pop" makes ME wanna POP someone. I'd much rather hear soda if I had to hear something besides coke. Although sometimes we just say drink. Imagine that. Even soft drink doesn't bother me as bad..... or carbonated beverage lol

Yeah no. I know you're not from the south because we just don't drink Pepsi down here unless we have to. Now Mtn Dew is a different story.

I like to think I've escaped the Southern way of calling it Coke, but the a few weeks ago I discovered it is in my blood. Typically I call it soda, but I asked for a Coke (in the North) and she asked me if Pepsi was ok and I said, no I wanted a Sprite. My husband was shocked -- I was shocked when I realized what I did haha.

Eww. Pepsi. Blech. Why would you drink Pepsi if Coke was available? Why would you choose Pepsi first? Lol.

I grew up in the upper Midwest calling it pop.
When I moved to the South, I was totally confused when people would ask for Dr Pepper Coke or Sprite Coke or some such nonsense, but they looked at me pretty funny when I called it pop.
So I just call it soda now.

I always used to say pop - and then in college my roommate despised the word pop in reference to soda. So I started saying soda... kind of stuck.
