"Here's a new reason not to OD on exercise : In a four-month study older woman who did six workouts a week burned fewer calories during their sweat sessions- and over all- than those who logged four sweat sessions a week."
Do you agree with this?
They don't back up any of their information other than "The intense schedule may be the reason participants were less likely to go for walks, garden or do other healthy activities outside the gym in their remaining free time."

Maybe b/c it said older women. But seriously, what the **** does 'older' mean. I mean if a lady is 70 tht many intense workouts could be overtraining damaging muscles. If 'older' means 30, I think it's a crock of shet0

Isn't the point of exercise to make your muscles more efficient? More efficient muscles=less calorie expenditure for the same exercise.0

This also doesn't give information about anything else to do with their lives, or even if the exercises being done are the same. I could do 4 hour long workouts in a week and compared to 6 half hour workouts, I would be burning more calories. What you have posted here is not enough information to even form a proper discussion0

my basic question is are they right in saying someone who works 6 sessions a week are losing less calories than those who are just doing 4 sessions a week. I can't add anymore because that's all that was provided for the article.
That's why I was asking does anyone agree with what was said based on what information is given. I would assume they mean 25+ for the older woman as this is pretty much what this magazine is geared towards. The semi older adult woman.0 -

Gonna pretend I believe it just for another excuse to blow off workouts.0

As a 26 year old, I would not consider myself to be an 'older woman'. When I read older woman I was thinking more 50+. My bad maybe.
As for the whole burning more calories through less workouts I have read from many resources that too many very high intensity workouts too close together can be bad for you. Let me explain.
Say, for example, you are doing a program like insanity. The recommended or 'average' (according to the makers) burn is around 800 cal for 1 hour of exercise. If you do a program like this 4 days a week you are creating a 3200 calorie deficit through workout, but because you are needing so much more fuel you eat extra on the days you are exercising. Doing this 3-4 days a week is fine, as you can then give your body a recovery day in between workouts.
If you do the same workout 6 times a week (once again assuming 800 cal burn per workout) you would be burning 4800 cal a week through exercise BUT the catch is you will be a lot more tired and have a LOT less energy, because your muscles have to work harder to repair. This being said, people will eat extra to compensate for this but tend to eat TOO much in compensation, because their body is feeling so much worse and so much more in need of energy.
In addition to this, we all know that more exercise = more muscle = more calorie burn even when sedentary. The catch is your muscles need the chance to repair between workouts to become more effective. If they are not allowed the time to build up these stronger fibers, they will not become more effective and you do not get this benefit.
The last thing to consider when talking 4 versus 6 days is people are much more likely to go hard at a workout if they are not still recovering from yesterday's workout and are much more likely to stick to their program. Keep in mind this is referring to high intensity workouts, which is what I would consider a 'sweat session' to be referring to.0
