Since I am new to this site, I'd really appreciate any/all advice with regard to exercising. I have health issues - heart disease and high blood pressure. I know that my weight has a huge effect on these problems, but am concerned about what exercises I can do safely. I have a treadmill and a dog that I walk daily. One of the problems is that I can't walk long distances at this time.

Try Turbo Jam. They have some great modifications. I would just start with the beginning workouts till you get more stamina. Also, do the 20 minute workout. It will fly by!0

I walk for most of my exercise. You can do it anywhere as long as you have shoes to do it in. Just make sure you've talked to your doctor before you start an exercise program and get his advice. If you start walking and keep doing it you can increase your time, speed and distance. When you start to get into shape you can try alternating fast and slow walking also and this will help with burning calories and cardio. I was able to lower my cholesterol a lot with my exercise and weight loss so good luck!0

Listen to your Body!! It will tell you when you are Overdoing it. If the Dr has approved your exercise, start with just walking short distances. Increase it slightly each week~~even if it is only 10 or 20 extra steps. Consistency is the Key. It does help with your Blood Pressure. My B/P was at stroke level and I have brought it down to 'Normal without going to 'Extremes' with either Strength or Cardio exercises.
Strength training can start with just having a couple of Soup cans next to your Chair and doing "Lifts" during commercial breaks on your favorite program.0 -
LJ you are Kick Butt!!!!! 165lbs.. you're my Hero!!! I agree walking 3 miles burns just as much calories as running 3 miles... it is just easier on your body!!!0

Hello! Welcome to the Site!
Have you asked your doctor regarding the exercise and what you can do? I should imagine walking will be okay, as long as you don't get too tired.
I would just build up gradually, try to do a little more each day. However, please do check with your doctor first, it is vitally important as he/she will know all your medical history. What about swimming, would that be allowed?
