The great aspartame debate

I've seen a number of posts about this as to whether it is safe or not and today on Yahoo an article has been published about it - for those who want to know what is true and what is not as it would seem that a lot of scare mongering goes on the wonder world wide web.

IMO, and yes, im aware that there will be MANY that dont agree with my opinion and that is fine by me... but there could be 1,000 scientists and doctors tell me that aspartame is "safe" but to me just because it is safe doesnt mean its good for me or a healthy choice and in this journey of mine im only interested in making the most healthy choices! Do I always make the best choices? No! but this is one instance where I feel good and feel that I AM making a good choice, by not drinking diet sodas or ANY sodas and not eating or drinking anything with aspartame.0

well....opium used to be considered safe too....then heroine....it's all about personal choice really. Some people don't like the fact that a man made chemical would be inside them, and others can care less. There is a lot of things the FDA allows that really aren't all that safe for you(i.e. the number of dead rats allowed in our food, animal droppigs, so and and so forth) Sometimes we just have to fend for ourselves in this world, because the FDA isn't always on our side for EVERYTHING. My friend has heart problems from taking phen/fen which was the "safe miracle drug" and hasn't had any help from the government from it....so yeah sometimes the FDA just passes things because the affects are so minimal0

A lot of things that we consume are potentially dangerous for us. I steer completely clear of aspartame and sucralose. From what I've read they have the negative side effect of causing a person to crave more sweets and could potentially cause cancer. The way I look at it....if it's something artificially created in a lab, I don't want it in my body. I agree with dumb_blondes_rock when she says it's mostly about personal choice.
Aside from the research I've done, I don't consume aspartame or sucralose because they make me bloat. I feel disgusting after eating/drinking it. The same can be said about HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup) for me. Don't get me wrong...I love my can of Coke. But I feel gross afterward.
I read an article the other day that cancer cells feed off of HFCS like crazy. That scares me. It makes me want to avoid national brand soda altogether.
I highly believe in sticking with natural sweeteners. I'd rather have something with pure sugar in it and work off the calories rather than feel ill later on. Stevia is also a great alternative. I love Zevia soda (sweetened with Stevia), and Izze (since they use sugar).
Maybe I am believing the fear mongering. I don't know. But I stick to my principles of eating naturally. And Frankenstein chemical powders are not my thing.0 -

I can tell you that I was having serious issues with muscle spasms, shakes, and weakness. I spent hours at the doctor getting some pretty scary tests done to try to find the cause. Out of desperation, I gave up diet coke. Within a week, all of the symptoms were gone. Was it the caffeine? The aspartame? I don’t know, but I know whatever it was I don't miss it one little bit!0

When I was pregnant, I had gestional diabetes. They told me not to have aspartame because it accumulates in the body and if I had to have something then get items with sucralose.
I now choose to go with natural sugar. I try to limit the HFCS, but I can't seem to break that Sunkist habit. Too bad they don't have a sugar version.
Oh...my husband used to drink diet Dr.Pepper all the time. He quit pop an lost 30lbs. He started chewing gum with aspartame and quit losing weight. He stopped chewing the aspartame gum and started losing weight again. Nothing else changed. Coincidence? Maybe.0
