Great for lower impact and especially good if the weather sucks... awesome for cardio, not so much for muscle building and the view gets old. I personally prefer running outside and will use an elliptical indoors because I tend to run at different pace's and tire myself too quickliy on a treadmill but they work for lots of people! Good luck!

I also have a normal flat treadmill. I do lose weight using it together with a daily calorie deficit. You won't lose weight if you use it and consume to many calories daily. The more you use it, the more calories you will need daily and the more chances that you're creating a calorie deficit.

Love my treadmill. I started running in April and wasn't confident enough to run outside I tend to bump into people I know ! I have lost 28lbs since and am venturing out not the roads now. But with the weather drawing darker I'll be using it more in the winter.

Start off at a nice comfortable walking pace, and gradually increase the speed each week. I would also suggest you look into Couch to 5K; I did the whole program on a treadmill.

Owning a treadmill won't cause you to lose weight. You still need to be eating at a calorie deficit and you'll need to do some brisk walking/running on the treadmill at least 3 or 4 times a week to have it amount to much of anything. Also note that machines lie about calorie burns and many are not accurate for distance traveled either so be cautious if you want to eat those calories back.

I HATE my treadmill. I much prefer running outside. I find the actual motion of treadmill running ever so slightly different to running for real, and it leave sme with very sore calf muscles. Maybe im just doing it wrong.

However, I will be using it over the coming weeks and months as an aid to recovery from some upcoming knee surgery, as it is useful for walking/running when you arent sure how much you can do. You dont wanna run 5k, run out of steam and realise you still have to do another 5k to get home again. Wait, is that such a bad thing?

OP, if you want to see any real results through treadmill work, then like everything else in this game, you need to work hard at it. eg. a 100 calorie jog a couple of times a week really wont amount to anything. 500+ calorie runs daily should make a big difference in not only your weight but the way you feel. If that sounds daunting, dont worry itll get easier real quick. When I first got my treadmill i could barely manage 300 calories on it before collapsing in a big sweaty mess, now 500-600 calories is a breeze. (well it was before i busted my knee again)

Anyways, I do tend to prattle on...

Incline is what makes a treadmill work! Because of lack of wind resistance while running on a treadmill, the effort of running on a treadmill at 0% incline is less than that of running on a level road at the same pace. There is a chart on hill runner .com that converts incline to exertion. According the the website, a 12:00 mile at 4% incline is the same exertion as a 10 min mile...and works the booty more :)
  • I LOVE the treadmill. It allows me to push myself in small increments and really feel confident. And yeah, I've lost a LOT of weight in the past on a treadmill. Just remember to push yourself!

I found my treadmill to be incredibly motivating...

    ...to run outside.

True story. Every time I tried running on the treadmill, within ten minutes, I was thinking of creative ways to make it stop. Fortunately for you, not everyone feels the same way about treadmills that I do...(and I do still use it for 5-6 minutes as part of my pre-lifting workout.)
