Exhaustion from exercise

Ive recently started my weight loss journey. Im currently 187lb and Im trying to get down to 130 or at least under 150. I walk to and from work everyday thats about 5-10 mins each way and Ive started doing turbo jam after work and staying within my calorie limitations. I find I can only do the turbo jam for about 20 mins tops and then Im too tired to continue. I give myself weekends off and today I was so exhausted and sore I slept all day (until 5pm). Is this normal? Ive only been concentrating on what Im eating and how Im exercising for about a week now but I feel discouraged because A. I cannot work out for very long without getting exhausted and B. I dont feel like staying within the given calorie range is helping me lose any weight. Any advice, tips would be appreciated.

Your diary is set to Private so I cannot see what you're eating.

How old are you? How many calories are you eating? How many carbs/fats/proteins do you aim for? Any medical conditions? When did you first start working out?

It is completely normal for a new exercise program to make you feel tired. Turbo Jam is quite a step up from walking, so it's not too surprising that you can only do 20 minutes to start (If I'm thinking of the right one … it's pretty intense, right?)

Make sure you are getting the right balance of macros, and you're getting plenty of micros (vitamins, minerals, etc) - a well balanced diet is the best way to do that. Also be aware that, with something new like Turbo Jam, you may need a few more calories (are you eating back exercise calories?) Being overly tired is a symptom of not getting enough calories, or possibly carbs … but again, it may just be you adapting to a new routine.

Give it a few weeks. And, if you haven't already, open your diary so that others can comment more specifically.

Dehydration would be my first guess. Lack of sleep daily would be the other.

It sounds like you're overtaxing your system. I can't see your diary to know how much or what you're eating, but my fist recommendation would be to only do turbo fire every other day for a few weeks. Your muscles and nervous system need time to recover. Also make sure you're getting plenty of water intake.
  • Okay. I made my journal public. Not much in there cuz as I said, Im new to this!

Its very normal to feel exhausted for a few days/weeks after starting a new exercise regimen. Make sure to get enough proteins and fats and drink plenty of water and get some good sleep. These are the basic points.
What i have learnt from here are the below:
    1. Set MFP to lose around 1-1.5 pounds per week and plan to eat back exercise calories.
    2. Make sure to weigh all the food(get a food scale if you can), otherwise we cannot be sure of how much we are eating.
    3. Use HRM to count the calories burnt during exercise. The numbers of website/machine/MFP usually over-estimate the numbers.
    4. Do not undereat/overeat. Try to always remain within the calorie range.
    5. Try and start a strength training routine as soon as you can.

    Good luck!

maybe you were very inactive before you began? for me i workout every other day and that was enough to lose weight and also I found i really really needed that day in between. i didn't consider it a free day at all but more of a scheduled day that was devoted to resting so i could be able to workout again the next day. my lifestyle was pretty sedentary and so i needed to start slow and easy. i think i was walking like 20 minutes to half an hour at first and then lately i've done 1.5 hours like it was nothing as well as hills walking. everything has increased duration, intensity, and even frequency i could now if i wanted to work out daily if i made alternate days "easy" workout days. but i would rather rest well and then do it again good. think about how active you were prior and if even this low amount might be too much for you. it depends on where you started and you can easily work up and pretty fast actually. rest is important.

When I first started working out, I couldn't even get around the circuit at Curves one time without getting faint. When I started doing a boot camp class on Saturday mornings, I would be wiped for the rest of the day. But I kept pushing, and now I'm pretty awesome for an old lady.

Give it time, keep pushing, eat enough protein. You'll get there.

    Good luck! :flowerforyou:

hi, I peeked at your diary. Your protein levels can get really low- you need to eat more. I'm 5"5 and I'm aiming for 100, and average about 80. You may also need more water- I get dizzy after exercise if I do not have enough.

When you first start working out it is exhausting and frustrating. Just stick with it and you'll notice some improvement in a couple weeks. Try doing the turbo jam every other day so your muscles have time to heal. Make sure you're getting enough water and eat more protein. I noticed your calorie goal was only 1200. At that low you can have lack of energy because that is not very many calories. You may want to up it some by selecting to lose 1lb per week or 1.5 lbs per week.
