RE: Zumba i went and also double checked 60 minutes of even low impact zumba at my weight and the min number on 3 different sites is 765 for 60 minutes.
Seems a bit high. I do an hour of bootcamp and usually burn around 350 calories based on my HRM. And this is 50 minutes of very high intensity.0 -
we will know more after I post tonight! I may be right, I may be wrong...0

Hildy: to answer your ??? Maybe try a new studio. Where I go, the room is large and there are a set amount of people allowed in each class. The dance moves are repetitive, and a good instructor will go over them before and during.. I dont blame you about not wanting to hear anyone over a loud speaker, my instructors are on a stage and not mic'ed.
Cheers sweetie - I reckon that's it. This class even though it was in a massive gym had no limit and it was frustrating trying not to get hit in the face and hang on to 'my spot'. I love, love, love dancing - will have to try somewhere else. Thank you! :flowerforyou:
PS Get some food scales for your kitchen0 -
I have done several different intensity Zumba classes. The worst instructor was actually the one that stopped to explain everything. That was also the lowest intensity one seeing as we were constantly stopping.
I wasn't able to do more than a half hour of the highest intensity class. There was very little time between songs and you were in constant movement. It was super fun but well beyond my ability to do for 60min.
The middle intensity also had little time between songs BUT she would start off each song with the easiest way to perform the steps for those who needed it and then raise it up to the highest difficulty. Her class is AWESOME. I can do the full hour but I have to take a breather once in a while.
The medium class burns around 300-500cals max depending on what you do. If your class stops to explain then you definitely aren't doing enough to burn as high as you indicated.0 -
You would do better to add the ingredients yourself, as you weigh and measure them. An "idea" is no more than that.
Yes. Invest in a kitchen scale. Guessing, using comparable items (unless you absolutely need to), using measuring cups, eyeballing is inaccurate. I was beyond surprised at how much more extra I was actually eating when I got mine. Having a kitchen scale really let's me control everything that goes into a recipe or meal that I make at home.0 -
Two things:1. I did Zumba for 6 months, 60 minutes classes, and burned about 500-700 calories according to my HRM. But your age, cardiovascular fitness (which determines your heart rate and recovery rate) and weight will determine how many calories you burn. At the time I weighed between 30-60 pounds more than I do currently. The most "accurate" ones are the ones with a chest strap that constantly record your HR. The more data points you have, the more accurate your estimate when plugged into the formula.
2. I second buying a kitchen scale and strongly recommend getting a digital one with a flat surface so you can set your plate or bowl right on top of it. The best part about it is you don't have to individually measure everything out, you can just reset the scale to zero before you add each menu item to your plate. For example, tonight I ate chicken tortilla soup. I put the bowl on the scale and added the measured portion (1/8 of recipe, all measured/weighed before cooked) to the bowl, set to zero, added shredded cheese, reset, added tortilla strips, reset, added sour cream (it's a semi-liquid, so it gets weighed if added on top), etc. Easiest thing ever.0 -
Hi - Thanks for posting here and I am really impressed with all the positive helpful replies.
I Used a Nike Fuelband for 3 months and I discovered it is the biggest marketing scam I have ever seen. What tipped me off is that I took a 3 hour drive for work and it said I burned 1500 fuel points. I threw it away and bought a real Heart Rate Monitor and started doing some research.
Good luck in your journey!0 -
I am 100% confident that you require to eat more calories. Low carb isn't the best way to go unless you are compensating for it somewhere else in your macros.0
-
I do Zumba every week for 45 minutes and my fitbit only gives me MAYBE an extra 100 calories. I am 160 lbs. When I was using MFP prior to my fitbit it was giving me like 500. I think you are overestimating calories burned.0
-
Bump. Curious about fitbit results later.
Edited, would like a little more info-
Your profile says you've lost 33 pounds.
Also, you live in the US, and logged some Canadian entries, which definitely had caloric differences, so I'm wondering if you are doing accurate research before logging prepared menu items.0 -
I tried Zumba for a couple of months - I have some questions:
a. Why is the room so crowded - how is this conducive to exercise/dance?
b. Why does everyone else in the room know the steps except me?
c. Why is the woman on a LOUDSPEAKER? This just raises my stress levels!
I love this I went a few times and was always at least a step or two behind everyone else!0 -
You already aren't being honest in your post alone...You say you're doing low carb and low calorie. You aren't doing low carb...I can tell in just one or two days of entry you aren't. I mean 0 carbs in a cappuccino? That's false. If it sounds too good to be true, it is.
Not sure what yore looking for...apparently honesty isn't being "positive" or "supportive". Why tell you things that are lies...how will that help you?0 -
All who are telling me how many calories I am burning are false, may not know all aspects of my work out, considering how much I weigh currently.
Alternately, some of us could have a very strong understanding of the issue because we've already had to sort these issues in our own lives, and are answering your plea for help with excellent information.
I can guarantee you that you aren't burning anywhere close to the calories you think you burning. That doesn't mean you aren't putting in one hell of an effort - it means you are starting from a place of very low fitness. And unfortunately "calories" don't care how hard the work feels to you, they only care about how far and fast you go. It sucks, but there you have it, that's the universe we live in.
But in the end, you'll have to make your own decisions on what you choose to believe, and how you act on it.
Good luck!0 -
Nope--diary isn't open0

Hi All and thank you for even reading my post. 58 days ago I began my weight loss journey, 1370 cals a day. I also started going to Zumba, and according to my Nike Fuel band I am burning close to 800 cals a day at Zumba alone. I havent lost anything. My diet is good, low cal, low carb, i put everything into mfp. what am I doing wrong? My diary is open please help!0
-
thanks all for your input. My quick ads for for 100 cal packs which with the diet I am following i am supposed to have 3 a day. The Zumba on mfp says 987 calories, which I also thought was insane, however when I wore my fuel band for just Zumba alone was showing 770-820 during a 6 day period of time. I did in fact go back to change my status on mfp from sedentary to active which increased my caloric intake. I will be sure to log a little bit more accurately, at least I am logging, and at least I am exercising. I am not making excuses, and certainly not lying to myself (thx for the support to the person who said I needed to be more honest).
RE: Zumba i went and also double checked 60 minutes of even low impact zumba at my weight and the min number on 3 different sites is 765 for 60 minutes.
I've done Zumba and those estimates and hours are very elevated. I can run for an hour straight and burn only 600. Are you working harder than nonstop running??? There is no warm up and cool down ? I'm sure you are working really hard but you have a lot of people giving you great advice. I would estimate an hour of Zumba to be about 400 cal.0 -
Fitbit is not going to give you an accurate burn, HRM will come closest. Measure your food and input is accurately.0

I wish everyone on their own personal weight loss journey plenty of success. With that being said I can not stand posts/posters like this one who beg for help/input and then get snotty with the first person to question anything they do. That's all........(deep breath).......I feel better now!0

Hello OP.
I know that this is extremely frustrating. But I just re-read over all the threads. I have seen a great number of experienced people who have been through the rigors of figuring out the puzzle of health and fitness.
When I was new to the board I was defiant about my beliefs and I took great offense to what some people said when I asked for help. I realized later that they were right.
There is a theme. And I feel people have been expressing this as diplomatically as possible:
1. You need to get more accurate about what you are eating.
2. You are most likely overestimating your calorie burns.
Please hang around the forums, find positive groups, and read, read, read... there are a lot of practical, helpful people out here who can really help you out..... if you let them.
Good luck to you on your fitness and health journey - The fact that so many of us are taking time to write means we actually do want to help. :flowerforyou:0 -

THIS is absolutely the worst MFP personality. In general I don't post when it's obvious I'm wasting my time and the OP already has their mind made up. But sometimes I just have time to waste I guess!0 -
Yes, I've done Zumba. And I've done higher paced, higher impact dance workouts. And I'm an overweight smoker (which means my cardiovascular system works harder than most). The most I ever showed buring on HRM in any sort of dance class was 765, and that was an 80 minute class of nearly non-stop dancing at a higher cardio level than Zumba. Even then, it likely wasn't super accurate because the algorithm is designed for steady state cardio, not stop and start. I still think you're overestimating your calories burned and a FitBit is not going to be close to accurate. It counts steps not level of exertion, and given a lot of the moves in Zumba, I'm willing to bet that it will count a LOT of false steps.
Also, I still don't understand what you are talking about with the quick calories. Why not just find or enter those snack packs on the data base (I assume they have a label) so that you can get a complete picture of what you're eating? I understand that you don't want to hear that you just have to work harder and be more on top of things to lose weight, but it is true. No one is judging you or thinking badly of you, we're just trying to help.0 -

This is a very good explanation - well worded - Great job!0 -
Then dont reply.. If someone is busting their *kitten*, and you dont like what they post and/ or their reaction to the posts, then why write back..0

Thank you all for your POSITIVE information and helpful tips. Defensive, I am not, frustrated I am. Wore a fitbit and the Nike fuel band to Zumba last night and Nike Fuel band said 887 calories and fitbit said 732.. I really dont care about the exact number, I am just glad I am burning calories doing something I love. Even if it was only 500 calories, its more than I would be burning sitting on my tush eating chips. Also, about my being honest on my food input.. None of this has anything to do with anyone else, so why would I lie to myself, I am too old for that, however, logging my food into mfp is new to me, and I am learning how to do it. My diary is open to my friends. I really appreciate the all who have actually spent the time to personally write to me and add me as a friend, I look forward to pushing forward on our journeys together!! Best of luck to all of you.0

I think some of us are just trying to actually help you, but you might not like the brand of help.
You said you haven't lost any weight in two months of following plan, I asked why your tracker said you've lost 33 pounds.
You said you never eat fast food, your diary, when open had mcdonalds, Dunkin donuts, Starbucks, five guys, carls jr and several Chinese takeout. (And I only went back about a week, sorry man, but that's probably more fast food than I've eaten in two years, not that you cannot eat ff on MFP, because you can.)
You said your diet plan required you to eat three 100 cal packs a day. I'm just really curious what plan this is because my personal trainer thinks those packs are 100 Cals of useless (very little nutritional value, just make me hungrier) and would rather I eat a piece of fruit and cheese.
I think a few of us were actually trying to help you, but now it's clear, you're just a special snowflake.0 -

Hildy; Youre so sweet!! Zumba.com has a link that says find a class.. I was told to look for a studio that is solely for Zumba. I am so grateful to have found an exercise I LOVE!! I love to dance too, and I love the structure of a dance class, and at first I was a mess not knowing the routines, but an instructor offered to meet with me to teach me some basics, and after that I was able to get it!!!! Love the Zumba!!!0 -
Looking at your ticker it says that you need to lose 140 lbs. If this is true and you are eating 1370 calories you are not getting nearly enough calories! And I too believe depending on your weight you may be over estimating your Zumba Calories burned.
I did Zumba for the first 6 months of my life style change. I weighed between 290 and 270 lbs for most of that and the most I ever burned at high intensity was no more than 600 Calories for 60 minutes according to my heart rate monitor. I am not saying that you are not working your Butt Off, but 1 MFP way over estimates most calorie burns, and a lot of websites over estimate Zumba Calorie burns.
Suggest you get a Heart Rate Monitor and up your calorie intake. Log CONSISTENTLY. It does not help to do this for months and not see any movement. You should be seeing some movement whether on the scale of in the way your clothes are fitting. I have noticed when I eat processed meals, and items with lots of salt I do not see the scale move as much that week. Don't get me wrong I still eat out, and do not make everything from scratch.
I recommend upping your calories, and do not eat your exercise calories back for a while and see what difference it makes.
When I first started around 290 lbs, I was eating around 1700 calories, and exercising about 300 calories a day. The first 30 lbs dropped off kinda quickly. I researched a good bit and found that I was not eating enough and I have stalled. I calculated my TDEE, and started eating closer to 2000 calories, and exercising about 500 calories most days, and the weight started coming off again. I just recently dropped my calories to get through my most recent stall, but will increase them again shortly.
I am just telling you what has worked for me. Everyone is different, and many would say I am still not eating enough, but we do what works for us.0 -
OP- do you take a multivitamin? I know that sounds crazy but it also helps me. I am also guilty of underestimating my calories when eating!
Good luck! You'll get there0 -
Special snowflake, so sweet, & thanks; sarcasm is a specialty of mine as well. I started using mfp a year and a half ago, I lost 33 lbs on a diet plan from a doctor in the DC area and then got pregnant, and then miscarried.. That happened 2 more times after that. so yep, I lost 33lbs, and thankfully kept it off, but since back on a diet and rigorous daily exercise I have not lost. I have gotten a ton of useful information on here snowflake, and esp from my post yesterday. Sorry if my food logging and exercise logs rub you the wrong way, and your necessity to make that evident on mfp, must make you feel so much better about your good doing... Keep up the good work!0

1. There is no way you burn that in Zumba
2. If you think that you do burn that in Zumba, you need to eat a hell of a lot more.
3. Weigh and measure everything.
4. Eat more to lose more - it does work, especially if you are as active as you say you are.
5. You need to get into the habit of logging. I know you say you're new and sometimes you forget to log, but that's on your shoulders. So if you forget, you are lying to yourself.
6. Cut the fast food - no wonder you aren't losing. Last time i ate fast food like dunkin, mcdonalds, etc? over 6 months ago. And i have Chipotle on the rare occasion of maybe once every other month, if I'm lucky.
7. Feed your body the nutrients it needs, otherwise it'll hold on to them and not let go of them. 3 100 snack packs a day? That's an odd diet if you ask me. Lots of carbs and sugars.
Sorry sweetheart, you can hate that we are trying to help you, but you did ask, and you just don't like the responses you're getting because it's not what you want to hear - Good luck and I hope you reach your goals one way or another :flowerforyou:0
