Polar Heart Rate Monitor Chest Strap Help

Hey there! I recently purchased the Polar heart rate monitor. The watch fits fine, but the chest strap is too big. My husband helped me rig the strap to make it tighter than the tightest it could go. I used it today and noticed it stopped working half way through my work out. It's on there as tight as it can go....do any of you smaller ladies out there experience this? If so, what did you do to help fix the problem? Very aggravating!!
