HRM newbie question (trails)

So let me preface this by saying that I've always wanted to be a runner. I've never been good at it (my mind wanders and I talk myself out of it) but my best and longest runs, where I actually feel the joy of it, have been on trails. Some trails are labeled with their distance but many are not... which brings me to my question.
I'm looking to purchase my first HRM. I've never had one before so I was feeling pretty excited... until I saw just how many choices there were. It's fairly overwhelming. I want one that's accurate and preferably one that has an optional "foot pod" accessory (I think that's what they're called) so that I can track speed/distance in places that don't necessarily have GPS signal. Not super pricey if at all possible (I know, I know, you get what you pay for haha). Anyway, let me know what you recommend please and thank you!!

Visit the sites like polar and garmin etc and see which have the functions you would like then shop around for the best price, but a pedometer can count steps and a watch track the pace so a cheap Polar FT1 and a pedometer may be the answer very cheaply if you don't need or are unable to use GPS most mobiles now have fairly accurate GPS apps available anyway!0
