Dumb question

What's the deal with all the adding people as friends? A few people have added me...and I don't understand what is different...can I see more on their profiles? Comment on different things that a non-friend can't comment on? What is the benefit is really what I'm wondering.

Sorry- this place is so different than the other forums I've been on. I really like it here:happy: ...I just don't understand how it all works yet

I'm guessing for more support and motivation. You can adjust your privacy settings, so friends and non-friends see more or less of your profile. I just have a few friends currently, but they've been really supportive!
  • Yes, you can see more of their profile if they have their settings so that only friends can see their pictures or stats or even their food/exercise journal. You can also comment and view their posts.

The biggest reason is MOTIVATION :) and getting to know others that are trying to be fit and healthy too.

It's all about motivation and inspiration. If you get a good network of friends with similar goals to you then you can all learn from each other. You'll get to know what areas people are more knowledgeable about and know who to ask for advice when you don't want to post it to the whole forum and end up woth 100s of responses.

I get a real boost when my MFP friends comment on activity in my News Feed. It's like the support of a Weight Watchers group, without the drive and the weigh-in! :) I also use my News Feed kind of like Facebook, to ask questions and get suggestions from my friends, muse briefly about my day, or share a good meal I made that was filling and low in calories.

The big difference I've seen by adding friends is you get to build a network of people that share similar goals or interests such as jogging or weight lifting for example without having to deal with the trolling & all the smartass's on the forums....

It's cool but it's optional. I didn't add my first friend until after I was on maintenance.

IMPORTANT FOR NEW PEOPLE: This is not like Facebook where you just add friends and they accept or not. 9 out of 10 people, or so it seems, have this on their profile: "I don't accept friend requests (otherwised known as FR) unless you include a note."

I think it's weird but some people attach a lot of importance to their friend list. I have no such warning and accept all friend requests and delete people rarely only if they are very, very strange.
