At what point will you buy new clothes? I have lost a little under 30 pounds but refuse to buy clothes until I reach my first big goal. I told myself when I was gaining the weight that I wouldn't buy anything else in my size and I want to keep up with it. I dont care if at times I look a little crazy.

I have lost 36 + lbs since June & 3-4 dress sizes so I've had to get some new clothes , but only a few as I still want to lose another 30 ish lbs - otherwise I'd be wearing bin bags !0
-
I had to buy pants at around 25-30 lbs lost. Honestly, I went to a lot of thrift stores and founds some really good stuff. There was no point in spending a fortune on clothes that would just be too big on me in a few more months.0

I bought a few items to get me through different weight loss stages - some from thrift stores, lots from the sales racks. There comes a point where it stops looking a bit silly/goofy and starts to look just plain sloppy when clothes don't fit well.0

i had to buy work pants. Only one size down otherwise I would be showing my tighty whitys. But I only bought at ARC. Spent $16 on 4 pairs. No thip enough to be a sagger. :bigsmile:0

I bought new clothes all the time-my body shape changed a lot over the course of several months-from a size 14 jean to a size 2; size large shirts to xs/smalls. My feet also shrunk and I had to buy all new shoes. New bras, undies, dresses, skirts etc. I got the majority at goodwill and thrift shops and then hit sales for the things I couldn't find there. As I changed sizes I just donated the stuff back that didn't fit anymore.
Plus I hit every season while my weight was going down, so I had to buy weather appropriate clothing as it changed. Now my weight has stabilized in my maintenance window, but last year at this time I had just started losing weight. Right now I'm looking for a new coat because my fall jacket from last year was an extra large and I need a small now0 -
I bought new ones at the thrift store.0

In between starting and reaching my goal I bought a couple of new things. When I met my goal, I went crazy!0

I bought clothes when...
My tops hung funny on my shoulders
My crotch/seat of my bottoms was too low (this was past the falling-down-when-I-walked stage)
My underwear hung out of the top of my pants OR fell down when I walked
My boobs fell out of my bra when I bent over
The first thing I bought when I started losing weight? A belt, and I thought long an hard about the style. It has grommets from one end to the other, I technically can't out shrink it.
In the last two years I've received more clothes as gifts than I can ever remember. I try to buy mostly second hand, I've occasionally shopped clearance racks in retail stores and I did buy two pairs of jeans and blouse with a gift card that was full price but the blouse only lasted 3 months!
I'm sure most people think I'm nuts but clothes are expensive and I'm cheap!0 -
I had smaller pants waiting in my closet but I had to buy new tops so I was able to stretch buying new clothes out a little longer but I bought a little here and there when things got too baggy and no longer looked flattering.. or literally fell off my body when I walked. Now, I need more pants cuz I only have one pair and those are getting baggy now too.0

All the time. I have gone from a 26W to 16 (almost 14 now). So nothing old fits anymore. But I don't feel good if I don't like my clothes...so I buy for each new size. I have bought a lot of new workout gear in the last while. That I buy Lululemon and pretty much everything else is from the thrifts (save a few desired pieces).0

I decided to have a big clothing throw out at 60lbs. Got rid of a ton of clothing. Then I ended up pregnant...doh!0

This. Goodwill all the way.0 -
I think you should buy clothes every time you drop two dress sizes, at the very least. At least a couple of things. Nothing too expensive, there are lots of discount clothing stores out there. ive started buying new shirts that i should be able to fit in soon. and damn is it fun!!!0

When my pants absolutley dont fit anymore, i will buy 1 or 2 pairs to get me through. I wont buy my favorite expensive jeans until im at goal though....Shirts.....i buy all the time.0

It really depends on your. I buy a few new items as I go! I was feeling discouraged because I still looked bad in clothes as I was losing the weight, and it was not me, it was because I was not wearing items that fit. So when I get a little extra money I buy a new item to reward myself and to make me see I have made achievements and this does look good.
I had a few items in my closet that were too small when I started so I did not actually have to start purchasing items until I was about at 30 lbs.0 -
Shop clearance like crazy!!
BUT I would only buy key pieces that will help you look and feel good still. For example, if you need to look nice at work, buy a well fitted blazer that you can wear over other pieces that may be a bit too big.
Buy things that can be cinched at the waist with a belt if you need to.
I would just replace a few staple pieces for your own sanity!0 -
I just went shopping. I had nothing leftover from last year that fit even remotely well. Not only was it enjoyable to be able to "pick" from different styles of tops-it was a lesson in getting used to my new body. Am only halfway to my goal-but the new clothes will carry me through to the end. I bought from top to bottom-even had to replace shoes...my feet had stretched my old ones out.0

I've been buying a few things here and there -- mostly work stuff so I don't look like a hobo in the office. I keep buying the wrong sizes because I hate trying things on and I don't feel like my body has changed drastically. I started as a 22W and I keep wanting to buy 20Ws but I've found I'm actually a misses' 18... and those are starting to bag a bit.0

I only buy new clothes when mine arent fitting anymore. By that I mean falling down (pants), baggy waist (shirts) or not holding mah boobz up (bras).0
-
I've bought a few new things, but for the most part, I'm living in my old clothes that I've taken in. It's pretty hard to justify a new wardrobe every few pounds, and the good stuff will have to wait until I'm at goal.0

When I need them! However, there are tricks when you're still losing. Sales, clearance, good will, and big STRESS on this point.....Buy "key pieces" . I did this even before losing weight. Buy pieces you can combine and mix and match to make several outfits! Have a swap party. Get some friends together and swap clothes if possible! Don't be scared to post on your FB or other such social sites "looking for gently used clothes, size...then say pm me for details"0

When my clothes don't fit. I hope to lose 2 or 3 more sizes. I realize I will buy clothes and grow right out of them. Its alright the feeling of buying smaller sizes is worth it.0
-
hmmm I buy when I see something in my new size I like.
I started in May of this year buying cloths but that was because all my 14's were falling off now I buy when my lovely sister tells me my cloths look like crap on me.
Why lose all this weight and not buy cloths to show it off.
So basically in January when I started to May didn't shop...started with tight 14's...in May bought size 10's, July size 9 and continue to wear that size (for now) but they are "bagging" now even tho they have spandex...eek.0 -
I bought little as it was needed (shorts for this Summer, underwear, bras), but I bought quite a few new tops for the colder weather even though I was 25 from my goal, because I don't have that much to lose up top... although I could probably have gone a size smaller in the end... but I don't like snug clothes so it doesn't bother me, and my old ones were just ridiculously too big.
Bought two pairs of jeans when it started getting chilly in September. I just ordered two more a size down. We'll see after that.0 -
I very slowly went from 307 to 270, and wore the same clothes that whole time.
Then my entire wardrobe vanished in a tornado, which was kind of bizarrely "convenient" because I was needing to replace a lot of too-big stuff.
From 270-250 I had no issues beyond a few pants getting baggy.
Suddenly when I hit the 240's, I had to replace almost everything. I'm now around 216 and it's very hit-and-miss. Some shirts still look totally fine while others have been tossed. In my current profile pic I'm wearing a shirt that was semi-tight at 225 and is getting too big now. Jeans seem to fit for longer than dress pants. Luckily I am a thrift fiend and don't work in a super professional dress environment anymore, but I still have to buy new casual/dressy pants every month or two even if it's just two size 18's that fit me differently. Clothes make a big difference in helping me look and feel my best.
Btw I have struggled with this some. My mother & husband both have to have mini-interventions with me at times when I'm wearing something like an ill-fitting enormous dress I still wanna hang onto, or jeans that are clearly falling off. It's hard at times! For YEARS I could just stick with 22's and 3X and it would be in my wardrobe for years and years...now I can't get too attached to the 1X or even my new 16 stuff because I know it won't be around for all that long, most likely.0 -

I've had this, too. Especially with dresses and pajamas, though I'm slowly getting better. I've left stuff at my mom's or giving stuff to my sister and had them throw it away. Sometimes it's so hard. I currently have about half a dozen pieces that I'm still hanging on to, it's going to be hard to get rid of them but a some point I know I will. There is only one shirt that I won't get rid of even after I reach my goal weight, and that's my Konstantinov (Red Wings Hockey player that had a career ending limo accident right after winning the Stanley Cup.) My mom had just bought me the T-shirt right before the play offs and it's been hanging at her house since I've not been able to wear it. I haven't made the decision about my HS t-shirts that I have, I may or may not get rid of them (it's not like I'd wear them out of the house).0 -

This is really good advice. I've "only" gone from a 24 to 16/18 so far but I am 90 lb lighter than my heaviest weight and I have noticed that some stuff that used to flatter me no longer does. Cardigans for example, look BAD on my body now and they used to be my saving grace all fall/winter. Same with capris. Meanwhile I look good in shorter shirts (like at and just below waist), shorts, and knee length skirts. Who knew!?0 -

Just goes to show—you gotta try stuff on. And really, even if you're not at your "ideal" weight, you can still look good along the way if you dress to flatter your body. And as you've just demonstrated, the shapes that flatter your body will change as your weight changes. And when you're done with your current sized cute clothes, you can donate them so that someone else can rock them. :drinker:0 -
For me, when I dropped two sizes most of my original wardrobe became unwearable. Goodwill has been my friend, and I've bought a few staple pieces with the thought that if I can wear them until I am again two sizes smaller (if that happens) I will still be able to wear them for quite a while at my current loss rate.0
