Percentages of macro nutrients... Carbohydrate, protein and fat... MFP defaults are pretty low on protein for most people...

Calories are what the food you eat gives you.
Macros (carbs, protein, fats) are what makes up those calories.

So if you were on a 2000 calorie diet, and your ratio was 40/40/20 (protein/carbs/fats)
    40% protein
    40% carbs
    20% fats
That would be 800 cal in protein
    800 cal in carbs
    and 400 cal in fats.

The ratio of macros you use are just the amounts of fats, proteins and carbohydrates you have in your diet. In terms of calories protein and carbs both give 4 calories, whereas fats give 9. 40/40/20 is a decent macro split but there are loads of different ones you can use. Layne nortons advice on this is good, but long to read. Theres a few simplified versions about aswell if you do some searching.
