  • Bingeing: b i n g e i n g - Eating a s*!t ton of food outside of your normal eating habits.

Not always a good thing but most damaging when used as a frequent cover for self loathing.

A predetermined time of eating large amounts in a short amount of time. Usually in private.

Bingeing is eating all of any packaged food without being hungry, usually due to stress. I used to to this with ice cream, pizza, or potato chips or french fries. When they fired my supervisor and 4 other people on the same day in early September, it was a carton of cherry tomatoes in 5 minutes. I am a recovering binge eater and one who now chooses much less calorie dense foods for bingeing. That does NOT mean I should have eaten that many tomatoes that quickly; it does mean that my weight didn't suffer for my emotions sake. I also worked out like heck that afternoon, which actually burned off the stress.

I don't think that a binge has to be eating lots of unhealthy food. It can be eating a whole watermelon in one sitting. No, not terrible, but you need to question WHY you would do that. If the reason isn't hunger, then it could be called a binge.

Also, any mindless eating, such as what I used to do--eating a whole box of Cheez-Its while watching TV. I had NO idea I was eating that much until I reached for some more and they were gone, and I was in a bit of shock over it.

If it's an eating style that you would be ashamed to tell someone about, then it might be a binge.

To me this is not a binge but I suppose if someone was only planning a treat of 1 square of dark chocolate daily and ended up eating the whole thing in one setting unless they planned it out and decided it'd fit to eat a bit more... yea, that's not a binge to me.

I think the word binge can be compared to the words clean eating on this site. We all have different schools of thought on what it means to binge. One member may say they binged on crackers because they promised themselves they'd never eat a cracker again.. they grabbed a few that were unplanned and that could be seen as a binge by that person.

I think it's really individual.. and the state of mind we're in when it happens.

A binge to me is uncontrolled eating that I've not planned in my day and I'm eating it because it's not hunger but emotions that are driving me to binge. It's typically followed by guilt, self loathing and all that jazz that comes with it.

To me reasons for binging are personal, individual and a bit hard to explain to another. BED is an ED so that's a different type of binge and wouldn't be considered an extra square of chocolate.

    just my thoughts...

You are right on the money here. The food consumed does not matter. It's usually the quantity. It is an out of control almost frantic eating. It's compulsive. Most of the time that feeling of fullness has to numb the mind. It releases some dopamine and brings about a feeling of relaxation. After the high the person usually has a period of self loathing and guilt.

It's almost always done in shame and never spoken about.

For me, binging is eating over 500 calories, from my goal. OR (for me), it's eating one big meal and consuming all of my calories (for the day), at once.

To "binge" is to do something to "excess". What is excess? Each person decides for him or herself.

People throw the word "binge" around on this site like it's going out of style and it's one of my pet peeves.

Binging is: Eating an entire package of Oreos in fifteen minutes
Binging is not: Eating three Oreos in fifteen minutes.

Binging is: Eating so much at one time that you can't stuff your stomach any more
Binging is not: going over your daily caloric goal by 100 or even 600 calories

    Uncontrolled eating past the comfort.

You can binge on anything...I've binged on rice cakes and protein bars..which sounds laughable, but when it is uncontrolled and my stomach becomes distended, that to me is a binge.

Over eating combined with the sense of feeling out of control.

As stated I think it's a personal definition. In my case I've seen myself eat things that were still pretty much frozen straight from the freezer. Semi clear cupboards & the fridge. Not forgetting the year I cut the bottom off the Christmas cake. Tie that in with hiding the packaging & replacing them the next day. I'm not proud of the fact that I can eat an entire cheesecake in one sitting, but I know I have done it in the past. For me 3 oreos would not constitute a binge.

To me it's about being out of control. Rationally choosing to have a treat is not a binge. Overriding your willpower with justifications (or just ignoring the shouting of your inner voice altogether) and eating something you already know you're going to regret is a binge.
