Hey lovely members.
Just wondering if anybody on here has existing back problems and then gone on to have a baby. I have had 2 Nerve root blocks in my back, the last one was 3 years ago. I have currently started to suffer with back pain again right at the time that me and my fiance have decided to try for a baby.
I have been told i will need to wait 40weeks until i will be able to have a injection (may next year) do you think i should just try get pregnant and manage 9 months of pain or should i hold off and wait.
Would really appreciate your feedback if you too have slipped discs.
Thanks

I don't have any slipped discs *knock on wood* and I haven't had my baby yet but I have degenerative disc disease. I'm also 16 weeks pregnant today and it may just be because I'm still early along but I haven't had an increase in pain. I'm doing a lot of walking and making sure to keep exercising. I'm also continuing to follow a calorie deficit approved by my doctor and we're aiming to only gain baby weight, nothing extra. I do have a belly band that really helps with my lumbar and part of the thoracic region (it comes right up to the base of my bra) and I can tell the next day when I haven't been wearing it. Honestly if you can manage the pain then I would go for it. Your body will also start to make a hormone called relaxin that might aid in some of the pain relief. My doctor attributes that hormone to the decrease in pain I feel from my *kitten* of a cervical region. (My biggest problem area.)
Best of luck and baby dust!0 -

Hi Gem,
Ummm! I think maybe ask a doctor or speak to a chiropractor? Seriously I've had 5 children and I suffer from back pain every now then. But it's getting worse as I get older.
This time I could not get in my car to go get my son from school...

hi.. as advised speak to your doctor.
from my own experience ..i had 4 babies within 5 years, i had back pain starting near the end of my first pregnancy and it came and went with each pregnancy. 3-5 lower lumbar slips and never caused me any major problems then. some people tend to slip discs (prolapse discs) only during pregnancy (and theres NO pain relief apart from paracetamol which doesnt do thing!), if you already have prolapsed discs you really need to see your consultant , mine would return to normal between pregnancies and id just be a bit achy on and off..
but the damage you might cause to your spinal cord causing severe and irreversable damage if you dont seek medical advise before another pregnancy is unthinkable.
Seriously take care of your back first.0 -
I went to see my doctor and she just said do physio before hand. I have had countless sessions with physios and they never help. If i have the spinal injection it wont fix me just numb the pain so any damage having a baby would do would happen anyway i just wouldnt feel it as much.
Its a tough one as I so desperately want a baby and the idea of having to wait until mid next year to even start trying is awful. Im 30 and will probably only have 1 child but my fiance is worried that having a baby will (in his words) "break me!"0 -
I had a prolapsed disc and had a caudal epidural (were they put steroid into epidural space). This gave me relief for a couple of weeks. Then a short while later I had a mini-discectomy (where they remove all the stuff that leaked out of the disc) in late August. I became pregnant in January and my back was so settled throughout my pregnancy.
I was told a vaginal delivery would be better than c-section and was offered epidural and saw an anaesthetist to discuss options before my birth.
I am finding I have a lot of rehab to do still (my daughter just turned 2) because I had pain when I engaged my core for years so it was very week. I go to the gym and do pilates twice a week which really helps.
I felt I had no choice but to wait to become pregnant as I was in so much pain.Your body is already under a lot of strain - my advice would be wait unless your age is very much against you or you have low egg reserves etc.0 -
As you're only 30 and planning one child it would be a pity to be in pain throughout pregnancy when it should be a truly lovely time in your life. It is hard enough dealing with a newborn when you are feeling well (feeding every 2/3 hours) never mind after months of extreme pain which effects your ability to cope anyway.
Honestly - wait!0 -
i wasnt allowed epidurals during labour because of my discs! This was 15 -20 yrs ago and things may have changed.
if you have checked with your surgeon/consultant and not just a gp and they said its ok then its up to you x0 -
Thanks for the advice ladies x0
