They're two completely different foods. Don't compare them like this.

Which is better - the moon or a rake?

The moon, you would never move that much water with a rake!

I don't see the moon clearing up my lawn!

i have both! well sometimes tea but that also has caffeine in it

    Me too!!

This might be one of the most ridiculous articles I've read... it conflates smoothies and juices AND only looks at commercially made smoothies... slow news day, perhaps??
If its a ridiculous article, can you please point me to some studies that give me decent information. I generally trust the bbc info as they usually (to me) seem to be impartial. I'm keen to learn, but still very much a newbie when it comes to good nutrition. Everything report to conflict with everything else..

I think this pretty much cuts to the chase of why people are saying that this article is a bit ridiculous...
I think a more useful summary would be:

Is coffee as bad for you as many people think? - Not necessarily.

Are all smoothies as "healthy" as thier image suggests? - Not necessarily.

Srsly...how can one directly compare the nutritional value and benefits of two completely different foods...ergo kind of a stupid article.

LOL. I agree, the moon is clearly better.

And coffee is better than a smoothie. Actually, coffee may be better than the moon. It's hard to say.

I apologise! It was the name of the article. Having reread the article a few times now, it doesnt compare them against each other, merely the pros and cons of each beverage.
Silly me thought that as so many people here might find this as interesting as I did, and possibly useful too.

Sorry you got a negative response, I think the title of the thread got people's hackles up because it sounded like it was playing into the whole "good/bad food" dichotomy which is such a touchy subject here on MFP these days. Thank you for sharing the article. :flowerforyou:

It's not that we are into the "good or bad" argument it's just that it's an absolutely absurd comparison. it's not about them being good or bad.

I'ts just that it's quiet possibly the most absurd comparison every made about food groups.

Yeah, that too. It isn't actually a comparison if you look at the article but it is titled that way.
