Friday morning weigh in Freak Out!! Two questions...

1. I'm 4lbs up since last Friday! I know this isn't fat etc etc. I started a heavy weight lifting program this week (NRLFW), and I'm doing cardio on my off days...so this is normal right? I've heard that you can gain a little when you first start out? I've kept within my calories all week, although not always with the best of foods..

2. Do anyone else's scales do this? When I weigh myself I pretty much have to take an average of three separate readings as it never comes back with the same weight twice, always half a pound or so different? Just curious!

If you are stiff/sore from starting your new exercise programme you can expect to gain some water weight as your body stores more water to aid repair. The weight goes when the sore goes. Hang in there!

Totally normal to show a gain when starting a new program. Make sure you are also taking measurements - you will often see progress with the tape measure while the scale is busy trying to mess with your head.

As for your scale giving you different readings - make sure it's on a level surface. Mine will give weird readings if it's on two different floor tiles that aren't level. Might need a new battery as well.

Stiff lol? My new favourite game is to try and guess which body part will hurt the most before I step out of bed! So yeah I guess that would explain it! It makes sense, and I kinna knew the answer to my own question - I just wasn't mentally prepared for it haha! Just needed some reassurance :)

And yeah as for my scales, I might need to try a new battery I think! Or maybe stop using them so much ;)

1 - when you start a new workout or increase intensity you put additional strain on your muscles...lifting in particular is very strenuous on your muscles and you tear all of those little muscle fibers. Those fibers have to be repaired by your body..this is how you get stronger and make muscle...your body requires water to repair those muscles, ergo you retain water...and water is frackin' heavy. It's also the water that gives you that "pump" that so many confuse with gaining actual muscle mass...not fat, not muscle...it's good old H20.

2 - The human body can generally fluctuate a good 2-3 lbs of your actual weight day to day throughout any given week. These fluctuations can be further exaggerated by exercise as in the case of #1 above, excessive sodium intake, dehydration, waste in your system, etc.

I've been maintaining the past 6 months or so and my weight generally fluctuates between 180 - 184 with 182 being the average over these 6 months...but I've had lows as low as 178 (dehydration and depleted glycogen stores) and highs around 186/187...super sodium days.

When you are first starting with weights you might as well toss away your scale for the first little while, it'll just freak you out. Pay more attention to measurements.

Thanks guys, esp wolfman - always full of great information. At least I know it's working i.e. my muscles are getting stronger from these results, what should be happening is happening I guess! I think I will have to go cold turkey on the scales for a little while :)

My scale gives the same number every time. Heck I can go to the bathroom and try again, it will give me the same number again. It's odd.

I think you are just standing on the floor.
