I'm going out for a sushi dinner tonight. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to order so I can still watch my calorie intake? I've never eaten sushi before!

When I go out for sushi, all bets are out the window and I eat whatever I want. If you really want to watch the calories stick with sashimi. If you really want the whole experience eat everything. The only thing I ever avoid are the deep fried rolls which I just find to be pretty gross.

Avoid the spicy mayo! Even though it's tasty. :(

Sashimi is the best bet, or a couple simple rolls (like salmon avocado or california rolls). Love sushi but so high in calories :(
  • Sashimi, yes I agree, but if you aren't into it... I go for the veggie rolls. They usually have avacado and cucumber.

MMMM sushi! I could eat it once a week. Try start off with a bowl of miso soup. It's very good for you and low in calories, plus it'll help fill you up a bit. Like other posters stated, sashimi is safe, but a little boring for my taste. Small california rolls, avocado rolls, and basic sushi (usually one slice of raw fish on rice) are good. You could also add a sunomono salad, a vinegar based dish that usually contains cucumber, cold noodles, and sometimes shrimp.

Providing you stay away from spring rolls, gyoza, tempura, and fried rolls, you should be fine; I think most Japanese food is relatively healthy for a meal out. Make sure you don't overdo the soy sauce either or you'll be way over your sodium intake for the day.

Pre-log what you will be having, and then plan your day around it. I have 700 calories set aside for sushi tonight!

If I know I'm going out for sushi, I try to make better choices throughout the day but I don't pre-log. I like to enjoy myself when I go and just eat until I'm full. Then I start back up with eating better the next day.

Lots of good advice here. I'll second the suggestion of sashimi but if you've never had sushi before then going full-on raw fish with nothing else might not be up your alley. In general stay away from anything crispy/tempura/fried and try to avoid anything with cream cheese or spicy mayo.

THIS Sushi is a MAJOR weakness of mine. I love it.

of all the meals out, sushi is not one i recommend holding back on.
especially if it's your first time.
sushi is worth skipping lunch for.
sushi is worth an extra 2 hours on the dreadmill for.
sushi is worth going over for.

go to dinner, try some of everything and enjoy the amazing experience that sushi is.
wash it down with sake and never have a single regret about it.

and now i'm thinking sushi for dinner...so thank you.

Just enjoy! Be aware though that the high sodium of soya sauce will have you retaining some water so if you have a weigh in coming up, keep that in mind.

I'm not a big fan of sushi, but my fiancee likes it so I get stuck eating it a lot. I like mine: cooked, covered in a spicy sauce, and loaded with wasabi so I don't know what I'm eating.

    *gag*

Most high quality sushi restaurants have BBQ tuna. Some may call it by another name but it is basically seared tuna with a side of sauce...totally delish. Also, all of the sushi places I go have other types of seared tuna dishes like pepperfin which is also very good and not too shabbby on the cals. I ask for mine extra rare. When/if you order a roll, you can also ask for light rice. Sashimi is another option but I wouldn't recommend it for someone on their first sushi try. You can try to fill up on sunomono or seaweed salad, miso soup and edamame too. I say just go enjoy yourself and maybe kick up your workout a bit...totally worth the splurge IMO.

Sushi is health, but try to use just a little of soy sauce (lots of sodium) . And eat ginger with sushi (ginger is very health and thermogenic food) .

And enjoy! Eat with guitly always put a extra weight in your body!

I just pig out with sushi. I don't even bother tracking. I just gobble it down. The next day, you get back to it.

IF you are really concerned, just go light for all your other meals for the rest of the day.

If you're that concerned about it, go into the database and look at the different listings for sushi, but I agree with the others who say EAT ALL THE SUSHI! I had spider rolls the other night (softshell crab). Soooofreakingood!

Go to town on sashimi (raw fish) and/or nigiri (fish on top of rice ball), but steer clear of any "Americanized" rolls (ie the ones that are fried, covered in goopy sauces, layered with odd ingredients, etc :noway: ). Simple rolls (tuna, salmon, etc) are fine....just make sure to set aside calories in your tracker for the rice (which is where you'll find them). That said, it's the best food out there, so have a GREAT time!

^ What he said. I am picking up some sushi tonight as well and I am just allowing a good chunk of my daily allowance to go to this.

    My favourite....spicy tuna roll.........drool.......

Going with Sashimi (meat only, no rice)
Will give you a lot of protein, and maybe decent fats......
    No carbs.

So you can't go wrong with that.

Sushi -- still not as bad, if you are needing some carbs for the day......

Sushi Rolls -- that can be the one to watch...especially if they have mayo or some other sauce....But some come with avocado, so that is some good fat.

Don't think you can go wrong w/ a seaweed salad.....

Im pretty sure I read somewhere there are no calories in sushi. So eat it all.

All kidding aside, if you stick to the simple rolls and nigiri, you will be hard pressed to break 800 calories. Just avoid the mayo based sauces (spicy sauce usually), and start off with a salad or miso soup.
  • LOVE Sushi.

Well, not really since I am vegetarian.
I'm my area we have a big vegan/vegetarian community so they have lots and LOTS of yummy and creative veggie rolls.

I'm not sure if they will have these, but I've gone to different states and areas and they offer similar rolls but with different names

The Hot Hippy: spicy marinated tofu with scallions, peanuts, cucumbers, and carrots
G.I. Jane: cucumbers, vegan cream cheese, scallions, and sesame seeds rolled in crushed wasabi peas
Buddha Roll (spicy): Shiitake mushrooms, kampyo (gourd), asparagus, shiso (a flavorful herb), horseradish sprouts, topped with avocado and vegan spicy mayo
La Fiesta: black-rice sushi with avocado, pickled jalapeno, and cilantro leaf, served with mango chili sauce
Mighty Mushroom: tofu, enoki mushrooms, shiitake mushrooms, and micro arugula on six-grain rice, served with shiitake teriyaki sauce
Spicy Mango: mango, avocado, cucumber, black rice, and spicy veggies, served with toasted cayenne sauce

Sooo good. Never had regular sushi (don't plan too because vegetarian/vegan sushi is already perfect)

I'd just stay away from the fried stuff (damn, tempura is so good though *tear*)

Enjoy and have fun! Drink lots of Sapporo beer too! (if you drink, that is)
