HelRunning Watch with HR monitor - choice

Hey All
So I won an award with my company and I earned points that I used to purchase the Polar RS300X running watch.
Only when it arrived today, it wasn't the 'full' version - meaning no footpod.
My choice is now to return it (and pay shipping) or purchase the footpod ($150 CDN)
Thing is you can buy a Garmin for $220 at Costco, and not need a footpod. (I'm weary of the weight and durability of a footpod) However the costco versions are much bigger watches that will be annoying when using just to monitor HR cals burned while doing thing other than running....
So I'm torn - and I really dont know what to do.
Background - I love running, and am building to a 30k (in March) and a full marathon in May. I currently use my phone (mapmyrun - which is often wonky) I also lift 3 days a week and try to get another activity in too (bike, hike, volleyball)
Guide me oh wise MFP'ers
Is the footpod really durable? or annoying?
is tracking cals burned in non running that important?
