OK this is for my FIL who has heart disease and is looking at more surgery due to clogged carotid arteries. I saw this on the Dr Oz show today but am kinda confused.
1. Get the Plaque Out of Your Arteries
Trim the fat and overhaul your diet. Under the Reversal Diet, only 10% of your diet comes from fat; 15-20% comes from protein; and 70-75% comes from complex carbohydrates.
So if I understand it right, on a 1500 cal diet ( he is sedentary) he would be able to consume ??? Gram of fat per day, ??? g of protein and ?? grams of complex carbs...I dont know how to figure this part out.
Can someone help explain it to me.

I honestly don't know how to do the proper calculations myself, but if you just use MFP in your "goals" section and change the calories and percentages of fat, carbs and proteins to match what you said for your FIL (and don't save so you don't mess yours up) you can get the base numbers. This is what it gave me when I did it just now;
1500 calories. 10% fat= 17g, 70% carbs= 263g, and 20% protein= 75g.
The challenge with that is that if your FIL does any exercise and plans to eat exercise calories, it would bump up his total calories which would bump up the grams he could eat of fat, carbs and proteins. Hopefully someone here will know the formula to figure it out not using MFP.

Just found this information regarding how to figure it manually:
[[[The energy yield per gram is as follows: Carbohydrate - 4 Calories, Fats - 9 Calories, and Protein - 4 Calories.
Example: What does a 50 kg athlete require in terms of carbohydrates, fats and protein?
* Carbohydrates - 57% of 2410 = 1374 Calories - at 4 Calories/gram = 1374 ÷ 4 = 343 grams
* Fats - 30% of 2410 = 723 Calories - at 9 Calories/gram = 723 ÷ 9 = 80 grams
* Protein - 13% of 2410 = 313 Calories - at 4 Calories/gram = 313 ÷ 4 = 78 grams
Our 50kg athlete requires 343 grams of Carbohydrates, 80 grams of Fat and 78 grams of Protein]]]
This is the website I found it on- http://www.brianmac.co.uk/nutrit.htm
So for your FIL;
If he eats 1500 calories in a day....
10% of 1500 for fat= 150, divided by 9= 16.66g or 17g
20% of 1500 for protein, =300, divided by 4= 75g
70% of 1500 for carbs=1050 divided by 4= 262.5g or 263g
Looks like that all matches what MFP says too.
Hope that helps!0 -
The math nerd in me gives you this:
Fat: 1500 X 10%= 150 calories. There are 9 calories in each gram of fat so, 150/9 = 16.67 or 17 to round.
Carbs: 1500 X 70% = 1050 calories. There are 4 calories in each gram of carbs (and protein). 1050/4= 262.5 or 263 to round
Protein: 1500 X 20% = 300 calories. 300/4= 75
Hope that helps.0 -

Here's the math in case you need to replace the 1,500 with something else.
1,500 x 70-75% = 1,050-1,125 calories / 4 = 262.5-281.25 grams of carbs
1,500 x 15-20% = 225-300 calories / 4 = 56.25-75 grams of protein
1,500 x 10% = 150 calories / 9 = 16.67 grams of fat0 -
Looks like I was late to the party with my post! :laugh:0
