Being a Diabetic

My husband has also been on the same diet as I am. He is a diabetic (type 2) and takes Metformin. Does anyone know if it is worth coming off it? We had read loads of stuff about it being great to take because of different benefits. Since starting the diet his blood sugar levels have been good even with the meds still being taken. Just really wanting opinions... Thanks...

That is really something you want to speak with your doctor about - some people think anything under 200 is a "good" blood sugar level while others strive to keep it under 120 at all times. The doctor can monitor progress with reduced or no meds.0

Some type 2 can be if not reversed then controlled with diet alone. I contracted steroid induced type 2 after years on high dose steroids, I was so bad I needed Metformin and Gliclazide to control it, with diet and exercise I have had the diagnosis reversed. You need to see your doctor for advice it is not a decision you should be taking or getting advice on a site like this about.0

This will depend on how his Endo Doctor (which I assume he is seeing one) decides to treat him based on his blood work. I am a Type 2 and have been on Metformin for 4 years now and based on my conversation with my Endo, he will leave me on Metformin for the rest of my life... My A1c have averaged 5.3 the last 2 years but per our conversation and my knowledge of my disease is that once you contract diabetes you burn off half or more of your receptors in your pancreas and the goal at that point is to protect the ones you have remaining because once they are done you will inevitably have to go on insulin through shots or the pump.. I was told Metformin is one of the oldest oral diabetes medications used to help regulate and protect those receptors that are still functioning... So I would have this conversation with his doctor and see what his or her approach is for managing his diabetes going forward..... Best of Luck0

I agree I think it's something you should ask your doctor about.
I hate taking metformin but it significantly lowers my insulin levels.0 -
I can tell you from my own experience that if you stop taking your meds your numbers will go up. I know it's hard losing weight while taking them but I also know the alternatives of not taking them. I'm also taking insulin. I dreaded that because of the weight issue but so far, knock on wood, I haven't had any problem gaining weight. I just haven't lost any. I just started using this site to see if it will help me stay motivated.0
