Bush dancing

Aka folk or square dancing. I was thrilled when I found out they still do it as part of PE in primary school. We did the waltz and jive in high school. Our school had their fete and bush dance today and each grade did a dance, then mums, dads, older siblings got dragged up to have a go. My seven year old loved it. Her class was the most prescise, while having having fun, another class was quite sedate, then one with mostly boys, just plain made everyone laugh. The year 7 was brilliant. These kids are at an age where they don't want to do daggy bush dancing , and with girls or boys? Even worse if they like eachother. But a lot still turned up, some dressed up, and they gave it their all.

I explained the tradition to my daughter, and my mum talked about doing folk dancing in New Zealand . She likes the idea of tradition, and loves her PE teacher. He brings the best out in the kids, and works really hard at running events for them. The school principle is big on uniforms, disipline, academics and fun. She stresses that kids learn it's important to work hard, but it's important to have fun while trying hard at sports or just dancing with the grown ups. The teachers all dress up for discos , and play games with kids on sports days. I think this is awesome and a great way to get kids moving and trying. Winners are praised , big time. For sport or achieving on exams. Kids who try hard and play fair also get lots of praise too. If they struggle , they get help.

I really like this attitude , and particularly love that they fit in the traditional sports with all the other subjects they have to teach kids now days. How are things in other countries or schools? We are at a state school. My sisters son is in private and I don't know if they do dancing, but they do have a rodeo yearly. Are the traditional dances still taught? Are parents encouraged to join in? Do the teachers have time to play and be 'human' with kids? I am just wondering what other people /schools do now days:smile:

Dam that sucks. It's funny how a certain amount of sport is compulsory here. Still too many kids aren't active enough, but the education are still trying. In kindy they worked out my daughter had though upper body strength. Nothing hanging of a monkey bar couldn't help. I think the whole junior play grounds (there's two for prep to year three) are based on climbing.
