Runtastic vs. Omron

I have a course I walk every morning - about 1.4 miles. I have the Runtastic app downloaded to my phone and I set it every morning when I do my walk - The number of steps is always about the same, between 2900-3000. I just purchased an Omron pedometer, so this morning I put it in the other pocket when I went for my walk. When I finished, the app showed 2900+ steps, the pedometer showed 2400+ steps. Huh? I didn't expect them to be exactly the same, but I was shocked that they were that different. Do you experts have any words of wisdom as to why this might be? Are one of these things known to be off that far? Have I set my step length wrong on the pedometer, and if so could it make that much difference? Help!
Thanks - Sally

I suspect all methods have some rate of error to them. I know the data that Endomondo shows as far as distance and calories burned is way different than what Runtastic shows. They both use GPS, so you'd think at least the distances would be the same.
