I usually eat at least 40% of my exercise calories back.

I got fat because I enjoy eating. If exercise earns me calories to eat, then I'm going to do it. Besides, if you exercise and don't eat some back, you usually end up netting below the recommended allowance.

Feeling hungry, tired and depleted of energy sucks.

^^^Pretty much. Although, I do tend to struggle to eat back enough of them, I like being able to rely on my workouts to eat a little extra if I'm hanging out w/friends or going to a party etc. As folks said above, MFP is designed to allow you to lose without exercising, so eating back what you've earned shouldn't throw you off at all.

My daily goal is currently a -500 cal deficit.
Me sitting in front of a computer all day, and on the couch all night: 2167 cals burnt
This means that I can eat 1667 cals and still hit my -500 cal goal.

I go out and run a 30:17 5k the next night, and burn an additional 446 cals
OK, figure I can claim 46 cals of that would have been burnt if I sat on the couch, so...an extra 400 cals burnt for the day = 2567 cals total for the day
I can now eat 2067cals and still hit my -500 cal goal for the day. Which is good as i plan on a nice carb/protein drink before and after my run.

Next day I go kayaking with friends, and we cover 18 miles, we are playing around a lot and take 10 hours to do it (Really? 1.8mph?), so I guesstimate that really only 300 minutes of that 600 min total was spent paddling. This gives me 2,166cals burned doing it. I guess a 1000 cals would have been burnt in the same time if I stayed home, so an extra 1,166 cals = 2,833 cals total burned for the day, so I could eat around 2300 and still make my -500 goal. Which is a good thing as some beers are going to be had as we sit around the campfire.

The only important part is hitting my -500 cal goal. And even on that, well, if I go over by 100 today, and I was under 75 and 50 the last 2 days, well, it all evens out in the end.

I am not racing to a goal, I am planning a life.
