Pear Shapes Out There? Excercises? Successes?

Whilst I know that we can't spot reduce and you can tone with certain leg exercises (how I avoid floor excercises - I'd so rather hop on a machine!)...

I'm curious - has anybody been a pear shape and reduced a lot of cms from their thigh circumference? If so I'd love to know...and if you did it deliberately (focusing on your legs) or it just came off as part of losing weight.

I'm a classic pear shape though in the last 2 years I've started gaining weight on my stomach. Until then, all my weight went to my thighs, butt and hips (previously I had a flatter stomach). I've always been a bigger girl with large thighs even before I was a teenager.

So is there any hope?? Has anybody managed to move from chunky thick thighs to medium size.

I've been reading that the fat on our thighs and hips will go LAST. I really hope not :(

I get that most likely when I lose weight and get to my goal, I'm never going to be thin and willowy but I'd like to know that I won't forever be having thick thighs.

I don't know if this helps or not but I run every second day for 20 mins... My legs are getting toned and I am losing inches around the biggest part of my stomach... I think I am down a total of 3 inches from my midsection, 2 inches from my waist and half an inch from my neck.... haven't seen any decrease in size of my arms or legs (leg measurement has not moved but I have gained tons of muscles in my legs).

I also just eat a good diet, not very many carbs from bread... mostly get them from veggies and I eat lots on protein and a good amount of healthy fats.

OK, so I'm probably not pear shaped, but I am fat. Les fat than I was 6 months ago, but I'm still fat..

What I noticed has helped for my physical appearance is swimming. It's defined my arms, shoulders and back. I've noticed (and everybody around me) that my shape is more defined in general, and I put this down to swimming at least 4 times a week (usually between 5-7 miles per week)

Apart from that, I use the treadmill and exercise bikes in the gym, occasionally I do heavy lifting, but I'm going through a hardcore cardio phase at present.

Pear shape, just as apple shape, apricot shape and all kinds of fruit shapes are eliminated by heavy weight lifting and good nutrition.
  • I'm pear shaped!! and always have problem with my lower part, so annoying! but since i cut sugar entirely from my diet and replaced it to black molase organic powder instead it works like charm, ah also cut your carbs, reduce the amount you eat slowly

I've been cutting out simple carbs (mostly) from my diet. No white rice or pasta.

I'm limited a little by foot problems (plantar fasciitis and heel pad syndrome) so at the moment looking to start a regime of biking, rowing, weights (upper and lower body only on machines) and swimming.

I cannot get any motivation for floor excercises at all.

    Thanks for sharing guys :)
  • I'm a pear shaped person, and I have seen the biggest loss inch wise so far has come from my hips and thighs. I walk, climb stairs, run, squat, lunge, do planks and push ups. Basically I do what I can without a gym.

Thanks heaps :D I'll have to look into that molasses stuff.

Interesting - tae-bo (I read somewhere that this women did a lot of kicking excercises) and that's how she reduced her thighs.

Thanks very much for link - will check it out :D Although...I may have to wait until my plantar fasciitis is recovered.

While I've lost a lot of inches from my thighs, proportionately they are still large compared to the rest of me. It makes finding jeans a real pain in the butt.

I was told by a MFP friend who really transformed her legs to incorporate plyo into my leg days. Lifting is great but the muscle I'm building is covered in squishy fat right now. I'm hopping around like a bunny and hoping for results.

Hmm, she got great results and is placing in bikini comps - but I hear ya about it not working for you while tae bo did. I don't kick very high with short big legs but I'll give it a try. Thanks!
