    I am a semi pro belly dancer and will become pro next year.(due to age limit where I live) I have 7+ years of experience. Belly dancing as a workout is great I've lost a lot of weight doing it and it helps to maintain your weight. You can't do this alone unless you decide to do it vigorously and nonstop for hours at a time. Doing it more than once a week is best, i make sure to get at least half an hour in if I do not have much time. I also recommend running/walking doing other exercises along this goes a long way. :) Good luck everyone.

    I've been belly dancing for over 10 years now. It's really fun and super casual, if you want to try classes. You don't have to be in any specific shape to try it, it's really great for toning! I would check on youtube for any free instructional videos, but there are some really great DVDs out there too. Shimmy was an awesome show before Oprah killed the Fitness Channel, you should be able to find it online somewhere though.
