    Here's the article....

SALINAS, Calif. — Fresh Express is voluntarily recalling some of its salad products because of a possible health risk from Listeria monocytogenes.

The Salinas-base company is recalling 2,825 cases of its Veggie Lovers Salad. The recalled salad mix has a product code of I208 and use-by date of Aug. 10.

The salad is being pulled from shelves after one package tested positive for the bacterium in a sample test conducted by the Ohio Department of Agriculture. No illnesses have been reported, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said.

The salad mix was distributed to 13 states with the potential for redistribution by customers to additional states.

According to the FDA and Fresh Express, the product was distributed to Missouri, Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Kansas, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

1 million pounds of ground beef recalled

The mix could then have been sent to Arkansas, Tennessee, West Virginia, Iowa, Minnesota, Virginia, Vermont, New Hampshire, Nebraska, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Mississippi and the District of Columbia.

The recall announced Tuesday comes after Fresh Express pulled some of its salads last month because of possible E. coil contamination.

Lettuce recalled for possible E. coli contamination

Fresh Express also recalled several types of its ready-to-eat salads in May after salmonella was found in a package tested by the FDA.

Fresh Express is a subsidiary of Cincinnati-based Chiquita Brands International Inc.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Hey-- me, too. Love the convenience of already made salad, but did it the old fashioned way last night, and had a salad to kill for-- lettuce, tomatoes, cukes, green peppers, red onions and ripe olives-- and no listeria.

    Go me.

These issues should not be surprising. The mainstream food supply is GROSS!!!

That is why you buy the whole head of lettuce and other fixin's, wash it, cut it up and prepare your own salad and vegetables. Preferably buying your vegetables from a local farmers market or growing your own.

Personally, I think it is so lazy not to prepare your own foods. That is what this country has become. Lazy. That is merely my opinion and I know my opinion does not count on this site, but I am going to state it anyway.

I don't like the smell when you open the bag, smells like chemicals to me. And trusting that the lettuce has been washed 3 times? I don't believe it and I don't buy it. I can buy 3 heads of romaine lettuce at Publix for $3.00, and that makes 6 good size salads. Why eat a bag of chemicals which has been sitting on the shelves for god knows how long when I can eat nice, fresh, crisp romaine lettuce that I cut up myself and know its clean? Not sure why anyone buys those bags.

First off I was just giving the people on the boards a heads up if they do eat bagged salads (I do not).

I wasn't speaking about you in particular...............

    I was saying in general.

There is a push on this website to say that frozen meals are OK in moderation, bagged, cut up fruits and veggies are the way to go, etc...............

I am just saying I don't agree with that mentality. It is laziness, pure and simple. So, there was no need to start off with First off............ :flowerforyou:

Thanks for the info! I actually have a bag at home that I need to check ASAP.

I personally don't have a problem buying prepackaged salad mix...I know it is a step in the right direction and better then opting to have pizza or a greasy cheese steak for lunch.

Sounds like we all need to go exercise....get sweaty get happy get healthy!

    Totally lazy, I guess

I purchase them occasionally but they usually go bad. I only get them when I will be using them in a day or 2. I did use the shreds today. I use Dole though. Thanks for the information.

I'll bet you even buy store baked bread and your milk in gallons, don't you? Cereal in boxes? Meat already butchered? Cheese already, uh, cheesed? Psssh. :noway:

    Lazy slacker.

I agree they do NOT stay fresh long do they? Not unless you plan on eating them in a salad on the way home! In the past I've dumped the store bag contents into a ziplock bag and it loses that smell and lasts for a good week. I think the smell is the plastic leaching out into the delicious produce we'll be eating.

I buy Romaine or others in bulk or in bundles 99% of the time. Lasts soooo much longer that way! Doesn't stink either or taste funky.:glasses:
