This is going to sound like a stupid question

But our abs are on the outside of our rib cage, right?

When I puff my chest out and feel my the edge of my lowest rib, it doesn't feel like my abs are there. But when I'm relaxed, it looks like my abs cover my ribs. I used to think the topmost one WAS a rib.

In these pictures, it looks like their abs start right underneath their pecs (or maybe about an inch away), and they seem to cover some of their ribs. Or maybe their ribs are only on the sides. I don't know.

Can somebody explain this element of human anatomy for me? I would post a picture but I am shy.

    You have four sets of abdominal muscles and the uppermost pair is directly below the pectoral muscles. They are all above the rib cage.
