5000 steps - all at once or over the course of the day?

This one kinda confuses me. I picked up a new pedometer, and after the fun and games of calibrating it to my usual stride, I see I put in ~1000 just at work (I work a desk job, but I'm routinely getting up to get copies, go to clients'/managers' offices, use the bathroom, go to the break room for water, etc., and I am actively avoiding the elevator now if I can help it). And as a TOTAL exercise novice here (not to mention 301.6 lbs and not cleared by a doctor for exercise), I'm aiming for 5k steps per day to start.

But do they have to be all at once (i.e. one long stretch of walking), or is 5k over the course of the day all right?

In other words, should I ignore the 1k I get at work and focus on getting 5k steps in one stretch?

Thanks in advance...

No doesn't have to be all at once. It's the total that counts.

Cool, I wasn't sure. Now I just have to figure out how FAST I walk...

Fortunately, one lap around my apartment complex is almost exactly a half-mile, I believe.
