Protein before bed?

Just read this study (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22330017) which suggests that consuming casein protein before bed had given better results than placebo for muscle synthesis.

Some missings I can think of are whether or not this 40g of protein ingested by those that saw better results were in excess of those that received the placebo.

Thoughts?

Here is the full study (PDF file):

I only skimmed it (it's too long & boring), but it appears the placebo group did have less protein. It also seems they all had a low protein diet the rest of the day, so maybe that explains the better synthesis from nighttime protein.

Anyway, it wasn't a long-term study to see if it actually increases muscle mass over weeks & months. My guess is the difference is minimal compared with having non-casein protein earlier in the day.
