Sore back and knees :(

I've lost over 50lbs in total. I didn''t go mad with the exercise and built it up slowly. Even then, I don't feel I massively exert myself. The maximum I do in a day is a 3 mile walk, 30 mins aerobics and 10 minutes on an elliptical trainer. But usually it's only a combination of two of those activities, sometimes just one.

But now, my knees and back are really starting to hurt. I had to stop trampolining (I only did 5 minute blocks) because the middle of my back hurts so much.

What's wrong and how can it be helped?

You need to strengthen your back by working the core and the muscles around the knees. Weight training/circuit training should help. Key is doing the exercises corret. Try a joint supplement and epsom salt baths to help ease tha aches

According to my PT part of the reason for the back problem - I'm assuming it's same place as mine hurts, i.e just above the bum - is that by doing all this exercise your core is not "up to it" and you need to do things like pilates/yoga type exercises to strengthen it. My own problem is not actually the "back" but the piriformis muscle, you might find having a chat with a sports injury specialist will at least identify the problem. As for the knees I have similar problems, basically its down to having carried so much excess for so long and they're wearing down! If you can still bend them OK then its probably a reasonably minor problem, if you can't then I would get to the doctor asap as that might be serious.
You might have to reassess what you do, I've had to rework my schedule for various knee problems so can't really do anything that involves twisting movements, i.e running/squash. Hope this helps :)

Thanks guys. Looks like I may have to give the old yoga/pilates a go again. It's something I've tried before but never stuck to as I find it too slow. I have a short attention span!

    Thanks!

The trampoline is high impact and jars your body while the elliptical and walking are low impact (no jumping). What kind of aerobics are you doing high or low impact? If you haven't done any high impact things - this would explain the flare-up.

The suggestions to do core training such as yoga or pilates is excellent. Until you are stronger, you may want to stick to lower impact activities. Ice, rest and stretches will help your current flare-up. Check with your doctor before taking any medicine but an anti-inflammatory pain killer such as Aleeve may help. Good luck and stay off the trampoline:wink:

Thanks. I actually thought trampolining was low impact! I tend to do low impact aerobics - I'm not one for getting too sweaty.
Cheers for the answers, guys x
