How do you even lift?

So, I have had body issues since forever. It's only been a few years since I have learned about dumbbells.
I freeze up when I see a bench and barbell.
Right now there is this 45lb bar. It's pretty awesome and whenever I am at the gym, I kinda want to take it home.
How do I do that? Any insights?
(And no, this isn't a troll post, I am genuinely interested.)
