New-graduate student

Hey, there. I'm new to myfitness pal. I have gained a bit of weight over the past two years after finishing my master's study to moving to a new location to work on my PhD. During my master's study I lived alone, was essentially a vegetarian, and did quite a bit of walking because of the proximity of the campus.
Starting last year, when I entered my PhD program I was unable to walk as much as I used to, and had moved in with my boyfriend of 6 years. We have significantly different lifestyles in terms of health and wellness (meat and potatoes & fried food person who dislikes 95% of vegetables), and it has ended up with me compromising my diet to become more unhealthy as I make most of the food and am trying not to make two separate meals.

I have put things in place to improve my dietary habits to be closer to where they were a year ago at the beginning of October, but Halloween did not help matters (love chocolate and pumpkin a little too much).

Any advice on trying to lose weight as a poor and busy graduate student and/or advice on how to deal with a picky eater when you are doing the cooking would be greatly appreciated.
