New to Lifting - need some resources/advice!

I would really like to get started on a strength training routine 3-4 days a week but I have NO idea where to start. All I have at home are workout videos and 5 lb hand weights but the more I lurk around here, the more I think I don't want to mess around with that stuff. I would rather come up with a simple routine that I can do on my lunch hour at work (I already run 3 days a week in the morning).
The only weights I really have access to right now are in the form of a weight machine at work, similar to this one http://www.rehabmart.com/product/bodysolid-produal-4stack-gym-frame-23533.html. I'm a member at the Y but it's too far away from work/home to get there on a regular basis. We will have a gym close to the house this coming spring/summer, so I would like to transition to free weights, eventually. At that time, I'll hire a trainer to learn more.
Questions:
In the meantime, though, can anyone recommend any routines/resources that I could do on the machine at work?
How do I know what weights to start with?
I know rest days are important - I was thinking a M/T T/F schedule, taking Wednesdays off? Would that work?
How often should you switch up your routine/weights/etc.?
Any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
