Is exercise suppose to deplete energy?

I have been working out for 7 months now. Im just wondering, am i the only one who has their energy depleted after every single workout? Every day i eat breakfast and then do a few things then i work out for 45 mins around 10. When im done with my workout i feel very sluggish and it takes a while for me to be able to do the rest of my daily tasks. Is this normal? I thought exercise was suppose to give an energy boost?

    Try eating something right after you finish to replenish the fuel you burned in your workout. Also, what are you eating for breakfast? Maybe you need to look at your fueling and make some adjustments.

    I used to feel the same way and then I found out that I have some vitamin deficiencies. Potassium (K), Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D. Now I take supplements and do weekly injections and it has helped me so much. I also take a pre-workout booster and it keeps me energized for hours even after my workout :)

    It probably has a lot more to do with your diet in general and you life rather than the exercise.

    That would happen to me during my temporary insanity where I went low carb. Otherwise, no. I generally run 10km or cycle 25km first thing in the morning (i.e., fasted), if that helps.
  • I too have lack of energy after working out. I have decided to start working out before bed so I'll go to the gym late, shower then go home and relax so I sleep better at night
  • I eat almonds after my workout, and i normally eat an apple for breakfast and rarely i eat great grains cereal for breakfast. I may have a vitamin deficiency. Thanks yall guys!

    I have never really understood the mentality behind expecting a magical energy boost immediately after a workout. There's probably nothing wrong. You worked your butt off and you're tired because of it.

    Exercise does indeed deplete energy...

    How many calories are you doing??

    If you are not fueling your body enough that maybe the reason your tired all the time.

    I always feel wiped out after a workout (and I eat before and after), but I feel like if I pushed myself hard enough I should be a lil tired!

    I find cardio very, very draining. Weight lifting not so much, if anything it amps me up a little.

    Another possibility is that your calorie intake is too low. I have to eat before and after I workout or I am lethargic and dying.

    You can feel very lethargic when you have used alot of your glycogen stores. If you do a super hard cardio at a high heart rate for a long time, you will feel this way. It will fix itself in a couple of hours.

    Like other posters say, you can try changing your eating before and maybe something afterwards and your overall nutrition level to see what helps. I find hydration before and after to help. I also find a 12 oz glass of 1% chocolate milk afterwards helps me.

    First, go see your doctor and have some blood work.

    Second, try eating a bit more. That before might be a great time to have your almonds with some yogurt, a slice of ham, some cheese, fruit, or oatmeal.

    After, see if drinking something like a small glass of milk helps or some more fruit. Some even suggest chocolate milk after an intense workout (or you could substitute fortified nut milks like soy or almond)

    Oh yeah hydration too...if you are dehydrated it can make you feel drained.

    Could be the timing of your exercise too what part of the day do you feel the most energized. Some people get that 10 o clock and 3 o clock low.

    that's what I do mainly because my schedule only allows for night time work outs.

    I think everyone's different. Some people feel tired and exhausted, others feel energized. In my own experience, for the first few months of consistent daily workouts, I feel drained. After about 2-3 months I get to the point where I leave the gym and feel supercharged for the rest of the day.

    You're probably not eating enough...you need calories for energy. My guess is you are crashing your diet and trying to workout...not a good combo.

    You need a protein shake after workout. Your body needs fuel. EAT!!!!
