C25K Question - or - The dog ate my shoes!

No, really, the dog did eat my athletic shoes. Months ago. Recently, In a bout of self-flagellation over my inactivity, I decided to give C25K a try; a decision which necessitated a trip to the shoe store. Today was the day for that trip, which leads me to my C25K question. When I picked my son up from school this afternoon and informed him of my plans, it led to a discussion of running and he asked if he could go running with me. So, my question for those who have successfully completed a C25K program: Do you think it may be appropriate for an eight year old to complete?

Both my kids started running track at 6. My son even had a regional 8U record running the mile. He's now in high school and heading to the State Crosscountry Championships. At 8 they are just wired with energy so I'd let him run. He'll no doubt let you know when he's had enough or he'll simply out run you...ENJOY!!!

My 8 year old granddaughter runs with me and has for a little more than a year. She has done 3 5K races. She enjoys it...she's exercising...so I say...as long as they're having fun.

My 10 yr old just beat me in a 5K (the first one that I felt comfortable letting her loose to run at her own pace). My 8yr old swims and plays soccer competitively. She has swim practice 3X a week for 2 hours at a stretch where she is running for 30 minutes and doing other strength exercises and then swims for an hour and a half. Her soccer practices are an hour and a half and she is regularly sprinting around the field. Both of these are more taxing than running C25K with you. Go for it and enjoy the time with your son!

I would ask his doctor if you are really concerned, but I see kids that at 5k running events all the time. If at anytime it gets too much he can also ride his bike alongside you

If you start off doing the plan together you'll probably find that the 8 year old can run circles around you. Lots of kids run, just make it fun, not like our neighbor who yells at his kids all the way up the road about not keeping up!
