How does this work? Do you really only do eight on the first day?

A couple of my friends are doing it, plus squats. Day 8 for them so far. If they can do more they do.0

Figure where you fit on the chart, and modify it to being right for you.
If you can do day 10 on the first day, do Day 10, and create the numbers for 9 extra days to add on to the end.0
