Running to lose weight

I competed C25k this fall. Ran an obstacle race in Hoboken, ran the Baltimore running festival, and the RW 5k. I only lost 15 pounds in the 3 months. I then tried insanity to lose weight and I actually ended up gaining a pound in 2 weeks. Done with that. Anyone else running to lose weight? I'm gonna start up again. I live in PA and the winter is coming. Any cold weather tips/ good running workouts to lose weight? Thanks! Feel free to add for motivation.

It's easy to out-eat a good exercise plan, but you can't out lazy a good diet. Focus on your diet to lose weight and good things will happen.
As for winter running...
1) dress so you are chilly when you first start, that way by the time you get warmed up you'll be comfortable an less likely to overheat.
2) it's easy to dress for the cold, but don't forget about the wind. Dealing with the wind can often be more important than simply wearing warmer clothes.0 -
Running is my favorite cardio for weight loss, too, but I'm finding truth in the saying "you can't outrun a bad diet."
5 pounds a month is about what I'm hoping for, and at 160, seems like a reasonable goal. Won't happen for me unless I also watch my calories.0 -
You are doing GREAT if you've lost 15lbs in 3 months, that's a little more than 1lb a week and that is a healthy loss!
I'm new to running and last month I ran my 1st 5K-I've lost 25lbs in 6 months. It's slow, but I'm working on having patience since I'm trying to so it in a healthy way. I've noticed a HUGE different in the past month in my running ability and weight loss once I started eating better. I'd take a look at your diet and see if there is anything you can tweak there to make it go faster if you want it to go fast. I think you are right on pace with weight loss and you're doing fantastic and doing it in a healthy way!
I'm in MA and it's getting cold here to, but I do a treadmill in the gym so I cant give any advice there, sorry!0 -
Just over 1lb a week is a good, sustainable weight loss. Don't give up on things because you don't get immediate results. Insanity might not make you lose the lbs on the scale but have you been measuring? How are your clothes fitting? Try and look at more than just the number on the scale because you're more than just a number.0

Did you measure your body fat before and after?
Also centimetres?0 -

I've lost 36 in 5 months, so your rate is healthy and stable. Don't forget too that you are replacing the fat with LBM so you may not see the numbers on the scale decline as much as you feel like they should. Try measuring yourself. Personally I only weigh in on a scale about once a month, but I take my measurements about every other week. As long as I'm seeing progress there I'm good. The second response is right though, you can't outrun a bad diet. I still indulge but I keep my choices pretty healthy and filling as opposed to tasty delicious junkiness.0 -

Never use "only" and "lost" in the same sentence. Your rate of loss is a good and healthy one. Just keep at it.
I can easily out eat my legs.
You lose weight limiting the bicep curls from your plate to your mouth, not by how many times your feet move.
You should run/exercise to improve your heart, bone and muscle health. A nice side benefit is the ability to eat a small amount more. Just keep running for the cardio/bone improvement reason and that reason alone.
I can't offer much about cold weather running, it is finally getting nice running in FL.0 -
You guys are all correct, thanks for the feedback. I always seem to eat properly until night time. After dinner I get hungry and definitely indulge a bit when watching Sunday/Monday/Thursday Night Football and while doing homework. If I eliminate that I definitely feel that I'll see more results. When I started running I did it for my health and didn't care about weight. I think I should definitely go back to that mentality!0

When you start a new exercise regimine, or increase the intensity of your current regimine your muscles will retain water for repair. Gaining a pound in 2 weeks sounds pretty normal to me...0 -
Run to feel great. You need to eat less to lose fat. Running will help support and enhance your progress but if you don't sustain a consistent calorie deficit primarily by controlling your food, you won't lose significant fat/weight.0
