Unexplained weight loss -Please get it checked out

About two months ago, I posted a thread here explaining my concerns about losing weight a bit too quickly (http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/1089131-unexplained-weight-loss-really-concerned) . Sadly, I did not really listen to any of the suggestions about seeing a doctor, and I paid the price for it.
On Wednesday evening, I was rushed from an urgent care center to the ER after having a blood glucose measurement of over 500. After about eight hours of ER treatment to get my blood sugar down, I was diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis and type one diabetes. I spent another 24+ hours in the ICU and then another day at the hospital before being discharged just a few hours ago. If I did not go to the urgent care, I could have possibly gone into a coma within days -if not hours.
Please, even if you think you can find some reason for weight loss, get it checked out before it turns into a life-or-death situation.

It is possible to develop type 1 diabetes in adulthood.0 -
Oh wow, I didn't know that. I'm sorry! That must be scary.0

OMG! That's scarey. So glad you finally know what's going on.0

Thankfully it wasn't worse. I hope you get a handle on your disease so you can live a long and healthy life.0

Wow! So very glad you are OK...per say. I know diabetes is a scary thing and can sneak up on you.0

Wow! Thank you for making everyone aware of this. Don't fool around with your health!
Will you need insulin now?0 -
That is so scary! I'm glad you are OK now.
I lost weight in my early 20s without trying, and it was the first noticeable symptom of a disease I have that is fatal without treatment. It still took me forever to get a diagnosis (it's a rare disease). My main doctor never did care about the weight loss; he never paid attention to much of anything but did tell me to reduce my stress
I got to 80-something pounds before they finally ran the right tests (a long time later). I started at 130.
I knew I wasn't hungry any more and eating much at all was like forcing food down. But yes, folks keep in mind that that is a medical symptom, too!0 -
How scary! I'm glad you got it taken care of and that you're okay.0

I am so very sorry. and I feel like an idiot where in your previous post I'm telling you not to worry about it, when obviously there was something wrong. :frown:0 -
Do not worry about it. It is difficult to actually know what is happening, and I really thought the weight loss was because of simply not eating instead of diabetes. Type 1 does not run in the family, so it did come as a bit of a surprise to everyone, and now I am hoping my younger sisters do not have it.
I am fairly young, but type 1 can occur in older people, though it is a lot less common. Because it is type 1, I will be insulin dependent for the rest of my life (but my sisters love watching me stab myself with the pen) and have been placed on a low-carb diet until my sugar is more under control.
Thank god for MFP though. My dad and I went crazy counting carbs for breakfast.0 -
Happy you are doing better. That was scary0
