Starting Out Strength Training Tips

Hi. I want to start getting into strength training. Bought myself a cable system off Craigslist this weekend. Can anyone offer advice on how many sets/reps is a good place to start and how do you know if you're adding the right amount of weight for each exercise? Thanks!

I'm sure a search would get you plenty of information on this. But, I'll give my 2 cents.
Generally, you'll want to understand what you want to accomplish and set a rep/weight range based on that:
- Muscular strength 4 - 8
- Muscle mass 8 - 12
- Muscular endurance 12 - 20
When you can get through three sets at the top of the rep range (using good form), it is time to add weight.
Now, once you get into this, please mix in some body weight and free weight work. Cables are good, but they won't give you the functional strength I believe you're really wanting. Once you have free weights, focus on compound movements. Little muscles (biceps, tricepts), which are what most of what you see people doing on cables, are nice to look at, but don't really do much for you strength or calorically.0
