Hi, I am 58 years old and excercise 3 to 4 times a week. I recently bought a heart rate watch with chest strap and my heart rate during excercise can get up to 173bpm. I have read this is way too high. I am now worried I might be putting myself in danger.any advice would be great

The maximum heart rate guidelines are based on "Joe Average". That may not be you. I am right behind you in age and have notices the same thing. Check this out. It explains it better than I could.

Thanks..I found it very interesting..I think I will try to keep my bpm at a max. Of 165..I found that when I did go into the 170's, I felt a bit sick, so I will try not to get carried away in future0

It depends on how long it is sustained...I can't imagine you're sustaining 170s for very long. When I do sprinting intervals I can hit about 95%-100% of my theoretical max...but that's not sustained effort. When I'm jogging or something I'm usually right around 80% or so with my HR being right around 145 - 150 BPM sustained.0
