when the weather outside is frightful...

so now that the weather is cold (at least here in MA), doing my daily walk outside is no longer happening. i hate the cold, and i'm not dragging my seven month old outside to suffer with me. i was wondering what other people/moms do when the weather is rough for exercise. keep in mind, i don't have enough room in my condo for an elliptical or treadmill. as much as i'd like to go to the gym, i have daycare kids until about 5:30 most days, and have my son 24/7 and obviously cannot take him in with me. i know this sounds like an excuse, and maybe it is, but i have nobody to watch my son five days a week (nor would i like anybody to) so that i can go work on my fitness. i'd love to be able to walk, because i know if i try jumping jacks or other forms of cardio at home, i'll either forget or blow it off.

Some of us embrace the four seasons.

my best imitation of an abominable snowman.

If you live in a northern climate it's just part of life and you can either adapt to it or not. Having fun in the cold is just a matter of wearing the right clothing (as a parent I appreciate bundling up a toddler is a PITA but kids really do like winter)

This- I live in Chicago and the only time I don't see a ton of running stroller pushers (seriously, everyone with kids in my neighborhood has a stroller they can run with) is when we've got such strong wind that they close the lake shore or the temperature drops insanely low. Most of the kids look like giant pillows, but then again, so does everyone going to work.

The other thing I might suggest is if you have daycare kids, find a fun game that makes you move with them. My friend found a show on netflix that has kids move around and exercise while they're watching it and she does that with her four year old. It might not be a ton of cardio, but it's something.

My mom and I take our walks at the mall during cold weather. I supplement with workout routines in the house. Youtube, fitnessblender.com, both great places to get workouts. Leslie Sansone is where I turn when I want low impact aerobics.

I like in central MA. We got snow this morning...

I still go outside, but my daughter is 5. If I still had to bring her along, there are a couple options:
bundle them up and use a cover like this: http://www.rei.com/product/825763/protect-a-bub-4-season-weather-shield-single
If you'd rather XC ski, get a kid pulk: http://wildernessengineering.com/KinderShuttle.html

Leslie Sansones walk away the pounds was fun but I go to the gym now. I also did the thirty day shred when the weather was crappy!
  • My wife and i joined the local YMCA ONLY because of the daycare included with the membership. Here at our local YMCA its no more than 2 hrs a day and no more than 9 hrs a week total. They are set up to handle newborns to 8yr olds and have all the same certifications as full time daycares do. I am a stay at home dad and this is the only way i get time to myself to work out.

    You can either:

    1. Get some warm clothes and just deal with it.
    2. Join a gym that has a daycare, and go to the gym with your child.
    3. Commit to doing some workouts at home on a regular basis, without equipment.
    4. Make excuses and don't exercise.

Really, the options are outside, at the gym, or at home. You just have to make a commitment.
