Here is my history over the past 10 weeks. It definately seems that when I exceed approx 1100 cals net, my weight goes up for the week.

  • You're gaining weight just by exceeding 1100 net calories?
  • You're gaining weight just by exceeding 1100 net calories?

    It sure looks like it.

first of all, you need to look at it as "over a ten week period i lost a total of 15.4 lbs" and not "every time i had this i gained".

second of all, even following your theory, you lost at 1466, you lost at 1339, 1577, 1277, etc and even your "bad week" of bingeing and drinking you actually lost a little.

a weight loss of 15.4 over 10 weeks is a very good pace. I wouldn't mess with anything at this point.
  • Thanks for the feedmack MyJourney, I appreciate it. However, on those days where my total cals were in the region of 1466, 1339, 1577, 1277, my net was under 1100 cals.

do another week with the same figures and see if you are up again... one week isnt long enough to say you gained actual weight when you need to take into account hormones, glycogen etc etc

    This.
  • What I DO find interesting is that my TDEE - 20% is 1525, and if we just ignore the net for the moment, I see that the weeks where I exceeded 1525 total cals (except once), the weight went up. Perhaps I should work with TDEE instead.

i dont see what difference that will make? its just a different calculation for the same thing....

At least with TDEE, you max calorie goal is not determined with how many exercise cals you burn that you try and eat back.

if you set up MFP correctly the numbers should be the same as TDEE if you calculate that right... whether you like the eating exercise cals method is just personal choice.

your question was about whether you were eating too much because you had gained weight this week... whether you say you gained weight on net 1100 cals or 1550 cals overall makes no difference, its just a different way of saying the same thing....

I'm still a bit confused.... let's use this scenario:

TDEE is say 1525 which includes exercise 5 x per week

MFP is set at say 1100 without exercise.

Say I exercise 5 x a week, and burn 700 cals per session.

On TDEE I still only eat a max of 1525 cals, whereas on MFP I would be expected to eat 1100 + 700 = 1800 Total.

    Total for the week on MFP = 11200 Cals for the week (1800 x 5 and 1100 x 2)
Total for the week on TDEE = 10675 Cals for the week (1525 x 7)

This is where my confusion comes in.

This is where my confusion comes in.

first off, MFP would not give you 1100 cals per day.... and i would question your activity setting when you calculated your TDEE, as 5 burns of 700 cals per week is a fair amount of activity (though of course i dont know your stats)

Perhaps it is better to look at the actuals:

    MFP = 1200 + 574 Exercise cals(5 x a week) = 1774 x 5 = 8870 + 1200 x 2 = 2400 = Grand Total of 11270 (Daily net is 1200)

This is what I put into iifym:
    Age 44
    Female
    5'4"
    Weight 147.8 Lbs
    Exercise 5 x / Week

    TDEE -20% = 1525 x 7 = Grand Total of 10675 (10675 - 2870 exercise = 7805/7 = daily net of 1115)

So it seems on TDEE, net calorie intake is less than on MFP.

but from that example you're talking about a difference of 85 calories?

Yep. I know it's not a lot... but those 85 (595 a week) seem to like my butt!

I'm impatient! I was really bummed after gaining a bit this week and really just wanted to try and understand why. I think I've got it figured. Thanks so much for your input and "stretching" me to think.

What I DO find interesting is that my TDEE - 20% is 1525, and if we just ignore the net for the moment, I see that the weeks where I exceeded 1525 total cals (except once), the weight went up. Perhaps I should work with TDEE instead.

Unfortunately, the picture is blocked by my work but from what others posted, your TDEE - 20% is NOT 1525. If you are averaging total calories a day, and your losing 1.5 lbs per week (which is aggressive for your current weigh), then your TDEE is 1400+750 = 2150. Ideally, you want to be around 1700 calories.

There are many reason you can gain; water retention from exercise, high carb days, your TOM, etc...
