how to start building my own workout plan

I've joined a gym several months ago and have been meeting with a trainer two times a week. It's been great and I'm seeing a lot of progress. So far I'm planning on continuing with the trainer twice a week for a few months more.

However, I can't keep paying for training forever and while I am learning new things and equipment with my trainer eventually I need to start working out on my own.

I need some help finding resources that will guide me in how to build a workout plan that is balanced so I don't work just one area of my body, and to be able to find trouble spots. I'm mainly interested in functional fitness not body building or working out just to look good.

Can anyone give me some good advice or point me to resources that would help?

Ask your trainer for a routine that you can do on your own. There is no point starting over with a new routine if you already have one that you know your form is good on. If for some reason the trainer won't give you a routine, or you're not happy with their routine, there's a link to a functional workout on my profile page.

Exactly ^ You're paying good $ for a trainer. They should be more than happy to come up with a plan for you.
