Alternatives to deadlifts

Been deadlifting for a while now, really strengthens my lower back, but I find my obliques are growing way too much doing heavy deadlifts. Just wondering what alternatives there are for lower back?

    Not sure, maybe these:
    Glute ham raise
    Roman chair
    Good morning

    uneducated guesses
  • The first is for legs, I'm looking for lower back. The second two don't seem like I'd be able to shift much weight without some special kit. Thanks for the advice though.

Seems like an odd sort of problem.

Without seeing a picture, I'd guess that training lats and shoulders would help rectify this issue. As opposed to taking deadlifts out.
  • Yea, I could increase the size of everything else, but the only problem is it kind of goes against the body image I'm trying to obtain. Like the classic tapered look.

    Straight legged deadlifts
    Lower back hyper extensions

Roman chair is my favorite, but there are some that take no equipment:

    This locust:

    can become this one:

    and they work very well.

The first link describes how to use one leg at first, etc.

I'm not saying this is a good idea, but doing lifts on a smith machine will take a lot of the lateral stabilizer strength out of the picture.

I see a guy at my gym doing laybacks on the lat pulldown equipment.

Obliques getting too big from deadlifts? Da hell? I guess, my obliques are quite wide too but I just think they will look bad *kitten* *kitten* once I'm down to 10%

No way your obliques are getting swole out of control from doing heavy deadlifts.
  • Hyperextensions are the one I guess, I'll give them a go thanks to the non-trolls.

lol I'm not trolling. I'm injecting a reality check.
  • You're talking nonsense, no offence.
