more to weight loss than calories in/out?

Is there more to weight loss than just burning more calories than you consume, or are calories all that matter?

I would say that the calorie deficit rules but if you want to preserve some muscle, feel fuller for longer and benefit from the Thermic Effect Of Food (i.e. how much energy it takes to digest) then consuming a fair amount of lean protein within that deficit is probably a decent plan.

Of course there are some people out there that have metabolic conditions which mean that they need to pay closer attention to their specific macro needs or they won't get the results even if they maintain the same deficit.

Some, including myself, find going lower carb for a while helps tame food cravings. I can go way longer without food being an issue these days.

I think there are people on here with medical conditions where the basic principal still stands but due to their various conditions they also need to eat certain macro ratios or significantly less then others of comparable weight and height.

My personal opinion is that there is far more to it than calories in and calories out, however the basic is solid if you want to lose weight.

Burning more than you consume will lead to weight loss. Where the variables come in is how efficiently your body uses calories, also certain food are more available for use than others so the rate of absorption might be different.

Basically, yes. You can tweak some macros to get to certain goals but the basic of take in less than you burn still applies.
